DESCRIPTION:
The Genetic Assistant will assist the Genetics Division by providing support to the Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors in various aspects of their clinical practice.
Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre's strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical patient support: Work with the on call Genetics Team (Geneticist/Genetic Counsellors) to assist with the screening of patient referrals by interpreting the nature of the referral as set out by the Division guidelines. Summarize relevant patient information for a variety of genetic consults; obtain a complete family history from the patient as needed; prepare and review pedigree information; retrieve and summarize appropriate medical records and other relevant information. Summarize patient health information and clinical impressions to complete supporting documents and sample logistics for genetic testing of patients in clinic for both in province and out of country genetic testing under the direction of the Genetics Team. Compose succinct patient histories from the chart and liaise with other healthcare providers to explore research/further possibilities for patients under the direction of the Genetics Team. Contact family members as appropriate (with consent) to discuss and prepare familial mutation testing. Communicate normal genetic results to physician offices/patient directly at the request of the Genetics Team. Support the logistics, follow up and communication with the Genetics Team regarding Newborn Screening results. Liaise directly with laboratories to compare genetic testing options based on cost, turn around time and sample requirements to provide the Genetics team with necessary information for selection of appropriate genetic tests. Search and synthesize information from the relevant medical literature to assist with the interpretation of genetic test results. Procure relevant education resources to patients and families by request of the Genetics Team, including the identification of current educational materials, support groups and other community linkages.
Clinic planning and reporting support: Complete program statistics as necessary. Participate in service planning, reporting and evaluation. Participate in Division and Program meetings and quality improvement initiatives as necessary.
Academic support to physicians and Genetic Counsellors: Categorize and summarize academic and teaching activity for physician accountability. Co-ordinate with team the addition of learners to the schedule taking into consideration the learning objectives specific to the learner and their program. Plan, manage, orient, and provide direction to learners to assist with clinical work and research projects. Support with drafting grant applications including synthesizing appropriate resources in the published literature to support the application.
Research support: Analyze experimental data and present information in an appropriate form, including word processing, spreadsheet manipulation, and preparation of graphs, line drawings, or photographs. Make use of statistical and scientific computer programs and generate analyses and reviews, and assist in the preparation of written reports for publication. Assist in designing, adapting or modifying protocols/presentations to meet the needs of the
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Biology or Genetics from an accredited university with evidence of understanding of research and interpretation of scientific and medical literature
Previous related experience in a Genetics/Clinical setting minimum of 1 year is preferred
Strong organizational and time management skills
Proficient Computer skills (MAC/Windows/NT)
Proven good interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately
Ability to work closely with a team.
Exceptional written, verbal and electronic communication skills.
Proven ability to attend work regularly.
Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands as described for the area of work.
