Required
Development and leadership:

  • Demonstrated capacity for coordination, supervision, leadership, and administration
  • Proven ability to provide leadership in a fast-paced environment, engaging the talents of volunteers and staff
  • Experience in training and mentoring staff to foster growth
  • Strong planning, monitoring, budgeting, evaluating, and reporting skills
  • Deals with conflict effectively in all areas of the shop, from staff, volunteers to donors and shoppers

Field expertise:
  • Solid understanding of retail atmosphere both instore and online
  • Knowledge of the second-hand market with an awareness of regulations regarding selling donated goods
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices and waste reduction
Communication expertise:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required: reading, writing and analytical skills equal to a college or university degree
  • Ability to relate well with a wide range of people and be comfortable in communication with volunteers, staff, MCCO constituency, the public, church small groups and volunteer groups of all ages
  • Ability to set and diplomatically communicate policies and boundaries
  • Ability to communicate in an articulate, engaging manner with tact and diplomacy when speaking with either colleagues or constituency
Work and Organizational skills:

  • Required to work non-standard hours, including Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturdays
  • Ability to life 50 lbs. and exert 11-25 lbs. of force frequently
  • May require 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday
  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary
  • Intermediate working knowledge of MS Office programs including Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of POS systems and reporting
  • Valid \'G\' Ontario driver\'s license
  • Police vulnerable sector check (required upon hire)
  • Legally able to work in Canada
Preferred
  • Relevant experience in a retail and/or business-related field is an asset
  • Experience working with and leading volunteers
  • Experience with computer programs that facilitate remote connectivity (e.g. MS Teams, Zoom, etc.)
  • Understanding of a manager\'s responsibilities as they relate to provincial health & safety legislation
Job Synopsis This salaried full-time position ensures operations at MCC Thrift on Mill are in accordance with the policies and guidelines established by Mennonite Central Committee Ontario (MCCO), and works with the staff, and volunteers to promote a friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all, promoting faithful stewardship and raising funds for MCC.

This role is accountable for the financial health of the shop, including annual revenue, expenses and applicable planning and reporting. The General Manager gives oversight and support for approximately 8 staff and a roster of 135 volunteers, cultivating and maintaining a team approach. The General Manger works with MCC Ontario (MCCO)\'s Thrift Network, and core support staff to promote the shop and engage shoppers, donors and constituency.

The General Manager will demonstrate servant leadership and will ensure the shop is in harmony with the vision and goals of MCC and will maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and integrity for those we serve, including volunteers, donors, customers, and the larger community.

This position is one of several General Manager positions at Mennonite Central Committee Ontario (MCCO). The General Manager is an active member of MCCO\'s Thrift Network Team and the Cross Departmental Leadership Team.

MCC is a charitable organization that partners with churches and community organizations worldwide to walk with people who are disadvantaged. MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence. As an internationally recognized NGO, MCC currently serves in more than 45 countries with over 475 partners, 1,000 staff and 40,000 volunteers.

Challenges

Key Responsibilities Oversight
  • Provide vision and overall direction for the MCC Thrift Shop based on MCCO Thrift Network and MCCO\'s strategic plan, including developing, monitoring, and evaluating project plans and annual plans for the thrift shop
  • Actively participate in MCCO Thrift Network meetings, collectively developing and planning strategic plans and operating principles
  • Participate in Cross Departmental Leadership meetings
  • Develop appropriate shop budgets within MCCO budgeting system and cycle
  • Monitor and evaluate shop success according to KPIs identified and develop and/or maintain reports that track indicators
  • Liaise with Advisory Council, community, supporting churches and local schools to build relationships and gain support for the shop
  • Ensure daily operations of the shop including opening and closing; supervise cash needs for float, banking and deposits; ensure customer experience is in line with MCCO Best Practices
  • Responsible for office/financial work including accounts payable and receivable, financial and business information, managing cash/deposits/daily reconciliation in consultation with the Thrift Finance Manager
  • Collaborate on advertising and promotions for the MCC Thrift Shop in consultation with the MCCO Marketing Strategist
  • Responsible for measuring and managing the sales growth of the shop in consultation with the Thrift Coordinator and Thrift Finance Manager
  • Liaise with educators to provide feedback for any placements, including co-op students
Community & Volunteer Engagement
  • Responsible for volunteer staffing including role design, recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating volunteers with the staff team
  • Ensure orientation, training, education and ongoing development for volunteers
  • Ensure appropriate records are being kept and maintain volunteer database in consultation with the MCCO Volunteer Services Manager
  • Arrange special events and group bookings - including Volunteer Appreciation
  • Arrange and chair regular volunteer meetings, either informal or formal
  • Keep volunteers and staff informed about MCCO and Thrift Shop activities with regular announcements
  • Be proactive in promoting positive public, staff and volunteer relations
Management Team Responsibilities
  • Provide supervision, evaluation, support, training and staff development for your staff team
  • Arrange and chair weekly staff meetings, conduct monthly check ins and complete annual PAR process
  • Schedule Staff
  • Participate in public speaking engagements - with commitment to MCC\'s values and mission
  • Respond to requests for MCC information and presentations in a timely manner. Develop and deliver effective and engaging presentations
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept and current, including human resources documentation/evaluations/job descriptions, and risk management documents
  • Responsible for the safe, daily operation of the Shop, including in-store special events
  • Provide back-up support for the Production Manager, Coordinators and Associates in their absence or as needed, including opening and closing of the Thrift Shop
  • Work collaboratively with the Thrift Network and MCCO core services
Health & Safety
  • Ensure employees adhere to company policies and legal regulations
  • Ensure staff and volunteers follow all established protocols related to Covid-19
  • Ensure staff on your team comply with the risk management policy and procedures and foster a culture where risks are identified and mitigated
  • Ensure the support and direction necessary for the effective implementation of MCCO\'s health and safety program are provided and, health and safety policies, procedures and regulations are enforced
  • Provide upkeep to the facility (shop) - connecting with MCCO Facilities Manager as needed
  • Responsible for all aspects of safety of the facility
  • Ensure staff and volunteers follow all established protocols related to Covid-19
Other
  • Ensure accurate tracking and documentation of sell-on goods is maintained and matched to sell-on Accounts Receivable
  • Share the news about the thrift shop and MCCO thrift network in the community
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, annual Peace Conference and Staff Development Days
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ\'s unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC\'s values, articulating the importance of MCC\'s criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
