Position Overview:



The General Labourer provides facility maintenance, upgrading and repair support services for water, wastewater, streets and drainage systems, trails and other buildings and facilities owned or operated by the County of Annapolis. The General Labourer reports to and receives direction from the Lead hand. The General Labourer shall be a member of CUPE Local 4549.

Job Responsibilities:

Clean, maintain and repair municipal buildings, sewage systems, water systems, drainage and road systems, parking lots and other municipal properties and structures Assist with winter snow removal activities Observe and record measurements by assigned supervisor Study and learn technical skills and methods related to operating, repairing and maintaining wastewater and water systems Work with other Municipal Operations staff (and contractors) to carry out repairs and modifications to the wastewater / water treatment and collection and distribution systems, roads, buildings, trails and other county facilities as assigned Carry out such janitorial duties as required at municipal sites Participate with other departmental staff in the development and documentation of operating and maintenance procedures Perform a variety of safe and efficient manual labour related duties Participate in basic safety training as required. May work with and assist labourers, wastewater treatment plant operators and water treatment plant operators as assigned Other reasonable related duties as may be assigned by the Director of Public Works, Municipal Engineer or Lead Hand

Qualifications and Expectations



Candidates for this position must possess as a minimum, a grade 12 or GED equivalent. Candidates must have a valid Nova Scotia driver's license (minimum class 5, class 3 would be considered an asset). Certification in Water distribution treatment and / or wastewater collection treatment and post-secondary education in carpentry, plumbing or electrical would be considered an asset.

Ideally, the candidate must have a minimum of five years' experience in the construction or maintenance of water or wastewater systems, with preference given to those whose experience is directly or indirectly working with a municipal government organization, or a combination of formal experience and lived experience.

Due to the nature of this position, the employee must have good communication, problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, job task planning and organization skills. Employees must be able to lift up to 23 kilograms and must be willing to obtain and maintain a variety of training certifications related to the position. This position will occasionally require work outside of normal office hours including evenings, weekends and holidays. The employee must be available to respond to urgent calls in adverse and variable weather conditions.

Pay: $23.29 per hour
