Job Summary:
The Cell Therapy Laboratory plays a central and crucial role in the Manitoba Blood and Marrow Transplant program at CancerCare Manitoba, and the Medical Laboratory Technologist at this laboratory exercises significant independent judgment, initiative and decision making, extreme accuracy and attention to detail, as well as the ability to adjust to a flexible and sometimes unpredictable work schedule. The work requires specialized training and clinical grade sterility as well as a flawless tracking system both electronic and on paper in order to deliver optimum results in patient care. It also entails direct contact with biologically hazardous specimens and high-risk chemicals.
Under the general direction of the Medical Director, Processing Facility Director and Charge/Senior Laboratory Technologists, the General Duty Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for processing cellular therapy products; performing cell manipulation/evaluation procedures which include but not limited cellular product cryopreservation, cell evaluation and testing, cell culture, cell product thaw/wash and infusion, cell enrichment and/or depletion, cell storage and transportation, environmental monitoring and other duties assigned. The General Duty Medical Lab Technologist participates in laboratory quality management by performing validation, equipment calibration, and quality control of laboratory reagents and supplies. Procedures must be performed according to Standard Operating Procedures based on regulations set out by Health Canada, the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), GMP and Hospitals. Extended hours may be required including evening, night, and/or weekend shifts. The position requires adaptability and flexibility to procedural and schedule changes.
