The Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Counsellor is part of a pilot project to provide enhanced supports for families experiencing violence. The project is designed to support the needs of those involved with intimate partner violence - those using violence and those experiencing violence in a relationship, as well as their children. Duties shall be performed in a manner consistent with the overall mission, vision, and values of Family Service Saskatoon. The Counsellor reports to the Gender Based Violence Prevention Services Manager.
Duties include:
1. Emotional Support & Violence Prevention
Deliver direct emotional support and services to individuals and families.
Facilitate therapeutic groups using narrative therapy for individuals who use violence.
Conduct risk assessments to identify specific risk factors such as using violence, coercive control, and other safety concerns.
Assess family dynamics to detect risks and potential unsafe environments.
2. Intervention & Safety Planning
Provide individualized interventions to reduce risk of violence.
Engage individuals at risk of using violence through trauma-informed, culturally safe approaches.
Offer or refer clients to safety planning, short-term crisis counselling, crisis management and outreach services.
3. Program Development and Education
Contribute to public education and program development through workshops, presentations, group facilitation, and group interventions.
Maintain collaborative working relationships with Saskatoon Police Service, referral agencies, community partners and caseworkers from our partner agency, Family Service Regina.
4. Administration & Compliance Reporting
Complete casework documentation, session evaluations, correspondence and statistical records.
Adhere to child protection and intimate partner violence reporting protocols.
Participate in clinical supervision and agency meetings for professional development.
5. Team Support & Flexibility
Support supervision of peers and students as needed.
Perform work outside of regular operating hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor of Social Work degree or Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work degree
One to three years of direct experience in a relevant area
Be eligible for registration with and maintain good standing in a relevant professional association
Areas of Knowledge:
Counselling & Therapeutic Expertise
Proficient in counselling theories and practice, including crisis and short-term interventions
Skilled in theories of human development, behavioural change, communication, and conflict resolution
Trained or willing to train in Safety and Repair Model, Safe & Together, Narrative Therapy, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Violence & Trauma-Informed Practice
Deep understanding of intimate partner violence, abuse dynamics, coercive control, and risk factors
Experience in working with those experiencing violence (survivors) and those using or at risk of using violence
Applies trauma-informed and violence-informed approaches in all interactions
Groups & Community Engagement
Experienced in group facilitation and public education
Knowledgeable about community resources and services related to intimate partner violence
Culturally sensitivity and adept at working with Indigenous, immigrant, refugee, and newcomer populations.
Integrated Systems Knowledge
Familiar with the justice system and domestic violence court processes
Aware of the impact of addictions, mental health issues, and FASD on affected individuals
Professionalism & Operational Skills
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage complex, high-stress situations
Demonstrates ethical conduct, professionalism, and teamwork
Capable of managing multiple priorities and caseloads effectively
Holds a valid driver's license and has consistent access to a reliable personal vehicle
Final candidates are required to provide satisfactory criminal record checks including a vulnerable sector search. This position is in-scope, CUPE Local 5316.
Compensation:
Pay range of $4,812.87 to $5,312.50 per month based on a bachelor's degree and related experience.
