Hilltop Greenhouses Ltd is looking for a Garden Center Manager that is an experienced retail individual who thrives on challenges, while maintaining composure in a unique retail environment. The ideal candidate for this role will excel in driving exceptional customer experiences and achieving results through effective team leadership. They will also be fluent in operational efficiency, meticulous planning, and will have the ability to delegate while staying positive and cheerful!

About the role:



Retail Managers work closely with the Operations Manager for the overall successful operations of the garden center and will oversee staffing, training, inventory, visual displays, customer service, property organization and cleanliness, point of sale (POS) management, cash handling/ cash float procedures, and any other area that would support the overall operations of the garden center.

Retail Managers are part of the team and are expected to take part of the day-to-day duties that customer service team members perform, including cleaning, weeding, watering, organizing and taking out the garbage.

Responsibilities:



Lead by example in delivering exceptional customer service, caring for and maintenance of the plants and property, and providing a welcoming environment for our customers and our team members.

Oversee the supervisor, sales team, and ensuring daily tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.

Working with the operations manager to create, update and enforce all policies and procedures, including safety for the retail garden center.

Working with the operations manager to create help wanted ads, schedule interviews and support with hiring and termination of team members.

Be an active and contributing member for our Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC)

Share your skills and passion for gardening by providing proper training and guidance to our team members for the cash register, phone etiquette, customer relations, plant identification, plant care and maintenance, and all garden center cleaning organization and support.

Address any team member performance issues promptly and constructively, fostering a safe, positive and supportive work environment.

Collaborate with the operations manager to prioritize tasks and ensure smooth operations.

Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization to ensure a safe and enjoyable shopping environment.

Inspection of the garden center, at least once a day, for weeds, insects, diseases, damage, moisture problems, pruning needs, signage, quality control, safety etc.

Manage inventory levels and work closely with assistant manager/supervisor and/or sales team to restock products in a timely manner.

Prepare pricing for hard goods inventory and all plant material.

Manage inventory processes, including receiving and organizing incoming stock, ensuring accurate product labeling, and inputting data into the Point of Sale (POS) system.

Responsible for maintaining our POS system, keeping it accurate and up to date, and training all staff to properly use the system.

Preparation, counting, and balancing cash registers every morning, evening and mid day during busy season.

Establish creative retail displays that are updated at least weekly, and work with the operations manager to secure items required to have the displays reflect the current seasons.

Manage all social media accounts

Preparation, placement, and scheduling of all advertising, special events, and promotions for garden center.

Listen attentively to customer feedback, while not taking it personally, and take proactive steps to resolve any issues or concerns.

Create schedules to meet the seasonal demands of the garden center while staying within budgetary constraints.

Build and nurture relationships with our administrative, greenhouse and operations team to support the overall success of the store.

Must be able to fill in for any role including the sales team.

Operational requirements require a manager that can work alone, without support during the slow season. All job duties that are required by a sales team member must be performed by the manager. Job description for a sales team member will be provided.

Candidate Requirements:



Must be available to work all hours the garden center is open to maintain operational requirements. This includes working weekends and longer than 40 hours a week in the busy season and less then 40 hours in the slow season.

Vehicle required with valid BC driver's license. We are not on a bus route and we will require you to go to the bank and do some off-site errands.

Standing for 8 hours or more

Bending, lifting and moving items

Pushing and pulling fully loaded carts

Must be able to lift 40lbs

Must be able to work outside in all weather. The garden center is in an outdoor environment in with tents for protection against the elements.

Must be able to work alone during the slow season.

Experience in customer service, sales or retail.

Experience working with plants in a garden center or plant shop would be an asset but extensive personal experience or interest in houseplants would be sufficient.

Excellent communication skills

Must be a team player with ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals.

Must be pleasant, helpful, engaging and willing to go above and beyond

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00-$28.00 per hour

Work Location: In person
