The Social Gardener is seeking an Apprentice to join our Vancouver team. This starting role will begin as a part-time position, with the intention to develop into full-time hours once experience has been gained.
Founded as recently as 2021 it is our intention to grow and explore our existing services towards our horticultural and ecological goals. Here at the Social Gardener we do things differently to reimagine what a garden can be. We believe in soil health, plant diversity and working with the natural ecology amidst our natural environment. Additionally, we achieve our standards via hard work and effective land management.
The Social Gardener is a Vancouver-based landscape design and gardening company specializing in fine gardening. Our sites include a combination of natural, residential, strata and public spaces. We are proud to deliver a range of comprehensive garden services including soil development, garden design and land management.
Roles and Responsibilities
The ability to work both within a team or autonomously when required
Working with, and providing support for affiliate contractors
Provide support during the implementation of garden design
Operating tools and equipment safely
Vehicle, tool and equipment maintenance
Monitoring for pests and disease
Applying organic spreads and sprays
Deadheading
Cutting back perennials
Weeding effectively
Pruning shrubs and trees
Transplanting, division and reduction of plants
Planting pots, containers and borders
Installing soil
Composting
Woodwork
Manage job tasks within an allotted time frame
Desired Qualities, Skills and Experience
Horticulturally educated or experienced
Quick-learner
Plant ID including, annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs
Knowledge of pests and disease, soil science and composting
Follows direction and instructions
Reliable
Detail oriented
Creative
Entrepreneurial
BC drivers' licence
Land management
Enjoys working outdoors during all four seasons
Experienced in team sports
Hardworking and physically strong
A curiosity and enthusiasm for gardening is an essential requirement, however additional training can be provided where it is necessary to grow gardening knowledge and experience.
