Psychologist


Northern Gateway Public Schools invites applications for a Full-time (1.0 FTE) Registered Psychologist to provide services predominately to children in our Early Childhood Services schools from Whitecourt to Onoway. The successful applicant will provide a wide range of effective diagnostic, treatment, educational and consultation psychological services to students in our schools by working collaboratively with the Division team, students, families, administration, educational staff, and external agencies. They will provide psychological expertise and participate in multidisciplinary teams to support social emotional well-being and learning strategies for students and their families as well as individual and broad based support for teachers and school teams.


The person is committed to providing person-centered, compassionate, evidence-based, and trauma-informed general mental health assessment and counselling.

Responsibilities


I. Screening and prioritizing of psychological referrals

Consults and collaborates with school personnel and/or parents (e.g., School Support Team meetings, Family Oriented Sessions, Staff Development and Professional Learning Opportunities). Conducts direct classroom observation of students. Gathers pertinent information from other disciplines. Identifies needs of children and/or school communities.

II. AssessmentConducts assessments using structured and unstructured (e.g., observations, interviews, file reviews) psycho-diagnostic techniques and instruments. Assesses cognitive functioning, academic achievement, learning styles, social/emotional functioning, personality, self-esteem and adaptive behaviour. Interprets results of assessments to school personnel and parents. Prepares written assessment reports for the Student Record and for relevant community professionals on request.

III. DiagnosisContributes to the information base necessary for programming to meet student needs. Provides formal diagnostic opinions as mandated by Education and Childcare for the purpose of identifying students eligible for severe disability funding. Integrates multidisciplinary information into viable student modification plans. Complete Social Responsiveness Scale Assessments as required by Division Office Prepares written summaries and other documentation as required.

IV. ConsultationConsults with school personnel, parents and community professionals and agencies. Acts as a liaison between school personnel, parents and community agencies as required

V. InterventionProvides, evaluates and documents direct services to students, parents and teachers, in both individual and group formats, as required:

A. StudentsLearning and social emotional strategies assistance Brief counselling and referral for long-term counselling Conflict resolution groups Play based support Assess, present and support students identified through the COR Advantage 1.5 and Neurosequential Model of Education Trauma informed education
B. TeachersIndividual program modification, planning evaluations (e.g., assists in the development of Instructional Support Plan's) Development of learning, behavioural and social/emotional strategies and programs

C. ParentsDevelopment of learning, behavioural and social/emotional strategies Parent education Contributes to staff development by providing workshops and/or presentations within Northern Gateway Public Schools and the community as required. Provides resource material to support and facilitate educational programming. Provides crisis intervention services as required under the direction of Learning Services

VI. Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge and awareness of the current theory and practice related to meeting the learning and behaviour needs of exceptional learners.
VII. Works collaboratively with other School Support Services staff as well as Area staff to provide a comprehensive service to students with exceptional needs.


VIII. Performs other related responsibilities as required.

Qualifications




Education and Experience:


Be registered and a member in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists; Consideration will be given to Provisional Psychologists (we will have a supervisor) Maintain professional malpractice insurance Be certified in risk assessment and crisis intervention training Experience and/or direct work with children and youth with mental health and wellness challenges Have a valid driver's license Have a reliable vehicle

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

Combination of suitable education and experience Assessment and diagnostic skills Ability to work with a minimum of supervision Strong communication skills, both verbal and written Strong interpersonal skills Ability to work as a member of an educational team Personal suitability.
