The Shop Hand is responsible for assisting in light mechanical services, maintaining cleanliness and safety of the shop environment, and performing various tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the transportation facility. This role involves supervised mechanical work, winter maintenance, fueling, shuttle services, and other duties as assigned.
Job Summary
Key Responsibilities:
Shop Orientation Presentations
Present the annual shop orientation course to all drivers
.
Supervised Light Mechanical Services
Perform wheel and U-bolt re-torques.
Assist with work orders as assigned.
Charge and test batteries removed from buses.
Change or repair lights, including headlights, clearance, marker, and dome lights.
Conduct windshield chip repairs.
Support services under supervision.
Winter Maintenance
Remove snow and apply salt to building sidewalks and parking areas.
Use plows or skid steers to clear snow from the parking lot.
Install or remove winter fronts/bus screens as needed.
Fueling and Fluids
Fuel spare buses if fuel levels are at half or below.
Fill jerry cans when empty.
Transfer fluids to bulk barrels or prepare for driver use.
Check and maintain fluid levels as requested.
Bus Maintenance
Clean and change bus heater filters during CVIP inspections.
Pre-trip spare buses, including checking Webasto heaters, fuel levels, and power cords.
Wash and clean buses, including the wash bay and service bays.
Clean service pits and ensure monthly pre-trip books and fuel cards are retrieved and restocked at month-end.
Perform periodic safety walks to ensure shop walkways are clutter-free.
Install, change, or remove harnesses as needed.
Set and run Webasto heaters on spare or route buses as required.
Check bus cords and yard plugins to ensure functionality.
Deliver cleaning supplies to the janitor room as needed.
Transportation and Shuttle Services
Shuttle buses to vendors, schools, or other locations as needed.
Assist with bus rescues when required.
Organization and Special Projects
Organize C-Can storage as needed.
Assist with yard and bus parking organization projects.
Strip buses for part removal as directed.
Perform bodywork, including rust repair, sanding, and repainting.
Assist in setting up new buses, including decal application and wheel tag installation.
Parts Room and Tool Crib Maintenance
Act as a backup for parts room tasks.
Tidy and organize the tool crib monthly.
Build windows bi-monthly if no existing window is available.
Safety Equipment Maintenance
Replace fire extinguishers and brackets as necessary.
Replace first aid kits and brackets as necessary.
Physical Requirements and Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and mechanical services.
Ability to operate plows, skid steers, and other snow removal equipment.
Familiarity with fueling procedures and fluid checks.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Strong work ethic with the ability to take direction and work independently
Good communication skills.
Physical ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting (50 lbs), bending, and standing for long periods.
Valid Class 5 drivers license (Class 2S an asset)
Work Environment:
Primarily based in the shop and yard environment.
Exposure to varying weather conditions during winter maintenance tasks.
Regular use of mechanical tools and equipment.
Adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.
Work Schedule & Compensation
Full time position (Two Shifts 6am - 2:30pm or 8:30am - 5pm)
Benefits package available while on probationary period
