Your Position & How You Will Contribute:
Reporting to the VP of Construction & Design, the FTTx Design Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and delivery of the fibre optic network infrastructure supporting FTTx architecture. This role provides technical leadership and direction to a team of designers, ensuring design quality, consistency, and compliance with organizational and industry standards. The FTTx Design Manager works closely with cross-functional teams, including project management, construction, operations, and external partners, to align design strategies with project objectives, schedules, and budgets. This position plays a key role in stakeholder coordination, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement of design processes to ensure the successful deployment and long-term performance of the FTTx network.
Responsibilities & Key Duties include:
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of FTTx designers and engineers, setting performance expectations and supporting ongoing technical and professional development.
Provide oversight and strategic direction for the design of FTTx networks, including fibre routes, distribution architecture, and drop point strategy.
Review, approve, and ensure the accuracy, completeness, and constructability of network design maps and documentation produced using GIS and CAD tools.
Oversee and coordinate site survey activities--primarily within commercial environments--to validate feasibility, optimal routing, and infrastructure requirements.
Ensure accurate collection, validation, and integration of data related to obstacles, utilities, and right-of-way constraints into network designs.
Act as a key liaison between design teams, construction, installation partners, and project management to optimize designs and streamline build execution.
Lead cross-functional coordination efforts to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within scope, and in accordance with quality expectations.
Establish, maintain, and continuously improve design standards, documentation practices, and engineering workflows.
Oversee the preparation of permit packages, right-of-way applications, and required approvals in collaboration with regulatory, municipal, and internal stakeholders.
Ensure all designs meet or exceed industry standards, internal engineering guidelines, and applicable municipal and regulatory requirements.
Implement and enforce quality assurance processes, including design reviews, audits, and post-build evaluations to ensure performance, scalability, and compliance.
Monitor emerging fibre technologies, tools, and industry best practices to drive continuous improvement in design methodologies and network performance.
Oversee cost estimation activities and contribute to project budgeting by evaluating design options and identifying cost-effective solutions.
Partner with technology, construction, and procurement teams to ensure materials, equipment, CPE, and services are sourced efficiently and within approved budgets.
Support workforce planning, resource allocation, and onboarding to align design capacity with project and business demands.
Identify and mitigate design-related risks, including constructability challenges, permitting, constraints, schedule impacts, and cost overruns.
Manage design change control processes, ensuring impacts to scope, schedule, and budget are clearly assessed and communicated.
Define, track, and report key performance indicators related to design quality, cycle time, rework, and cost efficiency.
Serve as a primary technical point of contact for internal leadership, customers, and external partners on FTTx design-related matters.
Manage relationships with external engineering firms, survey vendors, and design consultants to ensure adherence to performance and quality standards.
What You Bring:
Proficient with the use of computers and software, including MS Office (Word, Teams & Excel).
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to telecommunications and fiber optic networks.
Familiarity with network design software
Experience:
3+ years of FTTx design management experience.
3+ years of SMB design experience.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in network design and deployment.
Proficiency in GIS and CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArcGIS).
Strong understanding of fiber optic technology and telecommunications infrastructure.
Understanding of Utility and Telecommunications planning, design and permitting.
Experience with project management tools and methodologies.
Education:
Post-secondary education in Geographic Information Systems is an asset.
Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
Certification in FTTx design (e.g., FTTx Council Certified).
