The Cook reports to the Shelter Manager and is accountable to the ED. The cook is responsible for food management at Horizons. This is a part-time position with flexible hours, to accommodate the needs of the Organization. Generally, the Cook will work about 20 hours per week.
DUTIES
Prepare and cook full course meals, Prepare and cook individual dishes and foods, Prepare and cook special meals for residents, Plan menus, Ensure quality of food and determine size of food proportions, Work with minimal supervision, Prepare dishes for residents with food allergies or intolerances, Estimate food requirements and costs, Inspect kitchens and food service areas, Train staff in preparation, cooking and handling of food, Order supplies and equipment, Maintain inventory and records of food, supplies and equipment, Work with specialized cooking equipment (deep fryer, etc.), Clean kitchen and work areas, Wash dishes
Education:
Completion of high school, Completion of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certificate in food preparation
Experience in food preparation in a group or residential setting
Familiarity with the health & safety guidelines for food preparation
Experience in menu planning and inventory
Aptitude for and ability to supervise and work with Horizons residents assigned to Kitchen duty
flexible schedule - evening and weekend work required
Self starter - able to work with little or no direction
Ability to work under pressure.
Excellent communication skills including verbal and written communication.
Experience in a non-profit, community based organization.
Experience organizing and maintaining food room and donation
Ability to work with a diverse clientele. Sensitivity to different cultures is essential.
