WNNB is currently seeking to fill the position of
Forester.
Working alongside the Nihkanatpat (Executive Director) and the Consultation Team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day forestry activities at WNNB.
The Opportunity:
The WNNB Forester is responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with six Wolastoqey communities, leaders, and partner organizations to promote collaboration in forestry projects. This position involves actively engaging Wolastoqey forestry stakeholders to ensure their involvement and input in all aspects of forestry planning, operations, and decision-making processes as well as organizing field days and collaborating with colleagues to safely and efficiently collect data, map points of interest and report back findings. The role requires strong communication, networking, and cultural competency skills to bridge the gap between the forestry industry and our Wolastoqey communities
Responsibilities:
Organization of field days with the purpose of data collection, monitoring, land base assessment for cultural use and recreation.
Organization of collected data and maintenance of data security. Mapping with ArcGIS online and ArcGIS Pro.
Build and maintain relationships with Wolastoqey leaders, community members, and forestry organizations to establish trust and mutually beneficial partnerships.
Facilitate consultation and engagement processes with Wolastoqey foresters to gather their input, address concerns, and ensure their perspectives are incorporated into forestry plans and operations.
Support the development and execution of training programs and capacity-building initiatives for community members interested in forestry-related careers.
Keep updated on legislative requirements, regulations, and best practices related to Indigenous engagement and incorporate them into forestry operations.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of engagement activities and provide recommendations for improvements.
Act as a liaison between Wolastoqey communities and the larger forestry industry to foster understanding, collaboration, and positive relationships.
Support the implementation of Wolastoqey land management practices and traditional ecological knowledge in forestry operations, where appropriate.
Prepare reports and provide updates to senior management on Wolastoqey engagement activities, outcomes, and opportunities for partnership.
Assets/Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related field. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively in cross-cultural settings.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement engagement strategies and plans.
Knowledge of NB forestry principles, practices, and regulations is preferred.
Ability to travel and work in remote locations, sometimes for extended periods.
Valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle in varying terrain and weather conditions.
Cultural competency or willingness to undergo cultural competency training as required.

Remuneration is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick offers competitive salary and benefits to our employees. The starting salary range for this position is $55,000.00 - $65,000.00. Working location is 35 Dedham Street, Sitansisk, NB.
