Career Opportunity
The Foreperson, Rail Vehicles will act as a Team Leader for the department where they will plan, schedule, direct and control maintenance activities within the section.
The incumbent supervises and instructs unionized employees and at times, contractors. They are the go-to person for the department conducting training sessions, investigations, inspections and quality audits.
The incumbent(s) may be required to work at various Rail Cars & Shops department facilities based on operational and business needs.
This position provides training and experience opportunities that would prepare you for a Supervisor position within the Rail Cars & Shops Department. These development opportunities may require you to transfer to other Foreperson positions within the Department.
What You Will Do
Monitor and track information, data, records, and/or equipment inventory, following up, and updating as required
Inspect equipment items and rebuild or improve functionality through forming, bending, welding, or other methods of fabrication
Assist or prepare reports, estimates, employee related documents, schedules, inventory, etc., and distribute to appropriate parties in accordance with established standards
Provide assistance in the preparation, development, monitoring, or other needs for a given project or organizational unit
Ensure employees are appropriately trained on aspects of work, policies, and safety, and that track maintenance projects are aligned with standards
Liaise with other colleagues, support staff, other departments, and potentially external customers or stakeholders concerning routine matters related to the work assigned
Planning, adjusting, and projecting work, schedules, costs, and systems as needed
Verify the accuracy, quality, reliability, functionality, system requirements, and/or specifications are met in a given process, document, piece of equipment, system, or work method
Review data for discrepancies, errors, trends, or potential cost savings, report and provide suggested solutions as necessary. Evaluate the impact and implications of findings
Complete tasks required to manage employees (administrative duties) along with approving or authorizing requests which are standard and meet related policy expectations and compliance regulations

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent
Possession of a trade licence and/ or OACETT Engineering Technologist certification is an asset
Thorough knowledge of the body, mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic and air conditioning systems utilized on urban transit vehicles (revenue and non-revenue), combined with a sound knowledge of the diagnostic, inspection, repair and maintenance procedures for these components and vehicles
Must have an understanding of how the various skills associated with the maintenance of urban transit vehicles are utilized in a major repair and component overhaul facility
Must be able to supervise the activities of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled unionized employees
Must possess a good understanding of the applicable regulations governing the maintenance and repair of rail vehicles and applicable environmental regulations, (WHMIS, etc.)
Sound judgement plus well-developed problem solving, organizational, supervisory, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including technical report writing
Strong scheduling skills with the ability to meet deadlines
Must possess a valid non-probationary Ontario Class \'G\' driver\'s licence
