Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Patient Care, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the FNE is responsible for delivery of nursing care to a patient population that has been affected by violence which may include but is not limited to adult and child sexual assault and intimate partner violence. This care includes complete medical forensic exams, administration of prescribed medical treatments, a leadership role within the healthcare team and facilitating coordination of patient care, discharge and patient follow up. Nursing care is provided utilizing the nursing process for a complete medical forensic exam.

The FNE assumes a leadership role in coordinating patient care within the healthcare team. Using Telehealth, the FNE provides consultation, clinical guidance and support to healthcare providers around the province as appropriate.

Experience

  • Two years current related experience in relevant areas (Emergency, Mental Health, ICU, Women\'s Health, STI Reproductive Health Counseling, or Specialty Counseling) required.
  • Current forensic nursing experience preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required.
  • BScMH, BScPN or BN preferred.
SPECIAL TRAINING:
  • Authorized Prescriber designation preferred.
  • Successful completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (adult/adolescent) course within 3-6 months.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of active registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) or the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with Shared Health policy.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Knowledge of:
  • College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses/College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM).
  • Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.
  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area.
  • Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
  • Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
  • Principles of delegation.
  • Mandatory legislated reporting.
  • Management of forensic evidence including chain of custody.
  • Ability to perform work independently with a high degree of organization and attention to detail.
  • Maintains scope of practice with Program approved medical forensic practices and procedures.
  • Maintains medical forensic competency by working a set number of shifts on a regular basis as specified by the Forensic Nursing Examiner Program.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions, and values.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking/problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients.

  • May be called upon to testify in a court of law.
  • May be required to travel to sites within the Winnipeg Health Region to complete medical forensic exams.
  • Proficient with computers, software programs, and applications such as Windows and Word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
