This is supervisory work involving the installation, maintenance and servicing of all municipal water systems in accordance with established standards and design specifications. An incumbent plans, assigns, schedules, inspects and may participate in the work of truck drivers, equipment operators and labourers engaged in installing and servicing 2\xe2\x80\x9d to 30\xe2\x80\x9d water lines; connecting newly installed water lines to existing mains; installing meters and detector check valves; installing, relocating, raising and repairing fire hydrants; installing fire lines to commercial and industrial facilities; thawing frozen lines, as required. Checks systems installed by contractors for workmanship and conformance with design specifications; measures precisely and identifies the locations of all contractor installed systems. Determines need for material and equipment required to complete projects according to specifications, size and nature of the project. Investigates public complaints and initiates remedial action; maintains effective public relations with the community. Ensures the safety of work crews and the public by advising and enforcing observance of accident prevention methods and precautions. Disciplines and motivates employees in the crew. Responds to off-shift emergency calls when on stand-by status for seven days at six week intervals. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of the Grade 12 supplemented by related technical courses plus sound related experience in a supervisory capacity, or, an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment; departmental rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and hazards and safety precautions related to work. Ability to plan, assign, supervise and review the work of subordinate crews; to direct operations involving excavating and backfilling trench\'s and joining and caulking pipelines; to direct the operation of heavy equipment including trucks, loaders, tamping machines, gradalls, backhoe diggers, cranes, pumps and compressors; to read blueprints, sketches, plans and diagrams and to prepare and maintain a variety of records related to the work. Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work. EOCP \xe2\x80\x93 Water Distribution Level II Certificate and a Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.

The successful candidate will be required to accept standby and call-out work assignments as required by the department.
