The
Food Services Program Instructor
is responsible for developing and delivering cooking and nutritional programming, both within the shelter and in the community. This role focuses on improving food literacy, skills, and confidence for program participants while ensuring safe and nutritious meal planning. The Food Services Facilitator will supervise the Kitchen Aide and oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen and community food programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating food skills and nutrition programs
Lead cooking classes, food handling workshops, and community kitchen sessions
Support food preparation and catering for internal and external events
Collaborate on creating and distributing educational materials
Facilitate inclusive and welcoming group sessions
Deliver monthly programming for internal clients in Shelter and Second Stage Housing
Coordinate with other departments to ensure integrated client support
Track participation, outcomes, and feedback; submit reports for evaluation and grants
Purchase food, kitchen supplies, and equipment within budget
Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks following dietary guidelines
Manage kitchen inventory, storage, and restocking
Report safety hazards and maintenance issues promptly
Recruit and support participants, especially marginalized individuals and families
Train, supervise, and engage program volunteers
Build partnerships with local organizations to enhance community programming
Contribute to planning and launching food-related social enterprises
Maintain food safety and hygiene standards in all kitchen activities
Clean and sanitize kitchen areas, tools, and equipment regularly
Skills and Qualifications:
Relevant post-secondary diploma or degree in nutrition, culinary arts, community development, or a related field
Minimum 3 years of experience in program development, group facilitation, and community outreach
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in food safety, healthy cooking, and nutrition
Experience supervising staff or volunteers is an asset
Proven ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends to support events, as required
Food Handler Certificate or equivalent certification
Standard First Aid/CPR certification
Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Check
Valid Class 5 driver's license with no restrictions
