Job Summary
The Food Services Worker supports the daily food program at NVSSS by preparing and serving nutritious meals to individuals accessing shelter services. Working in a commercial kitchen and under BC food safety standards, this role ensures meals are safely prepared, dietary accommodations are respected, and kitchen areas are maintained in a clean and organized manner.
This position is essential in promoting dignity, nutrition, and wellness among shelter guests in a respectful, trauma-informed environment.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks according to shelter menus.
Ensure safe food handling and sanitation practices (Foodsafe Level 1 standards).
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and food service areas, including dishwashing and equipment care.
Follow food rotation (FIFO), monitor expiry dates, and ensure proper cold/hot food storage.
Track food inventory, donations, and ordering of supplies.
Accommodate dietary needs (allergies, cultural preferences, soft diets).
Maintain food temperature logs, cleaning records, and inventory sheets.
Assist with receiving and organizing food donations or deliveries.
Support kitchen volunteers and team members.
Follow all NVSSS policies on confidentiality, safety, and trauma-informed care.
Qualifications & Skills
Foodsafe Level 1 certification (required before start date).
Minimum 1 year experience in a food services or kitchen setting (community, institutional, or commercial preferred).
Knowledge of safe food handling, infection control, and nutrition basics.
Experience working with vulnerable populations using a trauma-informed approach.
Strong communication skills; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Physical ability to lift 25-50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced environment.
Familiarity with culturally diverse settings, including Indigenous communities.
Reliability, flexibility, and teamwork skills are essential.
Basic computer literacy (for logs and communication).
Willingness to complete additional training (First Aid, SafeTALK, shelter procedures).
Working Conditions
Part-time position (hours vary depending on operational needs).
Work in a commercial kitchen within a shelter setting.
Moderate to high physical activity, with exposure to hot equipment, allergens, and cleaning agents.
May require evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
Emotionally dynamic environment supporting individuals with complex needs (mental health, substance use).
Emotional resilience and professionalism required.
Additional Requirements
Legal authorization to work in Canada.
Satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (required).
