We are looking for a dependable and committed Food Service Instructor to join our commercial kitchen team. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to mentor adults with disabilities (Program Employees) as they develop practical skills and experience in a professional kitchen setting.
The Food Service Instructor collaborates with the Manager of Catering & Food Service, fellow Instructors, Program Employees, and the broader New Leaf Enterprises and Easter Seals Nova Scotia team. The ideal candidate is punctual, dependable, and committed to maintaining consistent attendance. They are organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable. They manage competing priorities in a fast-paced kitchen environment while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor. They also follow established recipes and standards with consistency and precision.
The successful candidate must be able to work Monday to Friday, from 7am to 3pm at both the main Dartmouth location (22 Fielding Ave) and the Halifax location at the Nova Scotia Rehab Centre (1341 Summer Street)
Key Responsibilities
- Teach and support Program Employees in mastering food service skills which include, but are not limited to:
- Baking sweets, pastries and Cafe orders
- Safe food handling, storage, preparation, and kitchen organization
- Customer service
- Guide Program Employees through skill development and goal achievement while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
- Support daily operations of the commercial kitchen, catering and Cafes including coordinating production schedules and balancing workload to support both training and operational needs
- Document inventory (product made and dry goods) as well as document and minimize food waste
- Aid in ordering food and kitchen supplies as needed, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and minimal waste
- Maintain consistent communication with staff team regarding scheduling, training progress, and support needs
Qualifications
- Formal training or equivalent experience in baking and catering preparation
- A valid Food Handler Training Certificate is required. Recertification will be arranged for qualified candidates if necessary
- Experience in commercial cooking, baking, and retail food service
- Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to mentor and teach these skills to others
- Demonstrated reliability and dependability, with consistent attendance and punctuality
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs. and operate commercial kitchen equipment
- Valid Nova Scotia driver's license with a clean driver's abstract
- A clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
- A strong commitment to supporting persons with disabilities
As a program of the Department of Opportunities and Social Development
, all staff are required to obtain certification in the following core competencies. If you do not already have them, training will be provided:
- Fire and Life Safety, Medication Awareness, Standard First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention, Behavioral Supports, and Individualized Planning
