Job Description

The Food Security Coordinator will work collaboratively with community stakeholders to increase food security and strengthen local food systems in Revelstoke through leadership and support for new and existing community food initiatives, programs, and policies. The Coordinator reports to the LFI Executive Director and works in cooperation with the Revelstoke Food Security Committee.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Food Security Strategy & Access to Food

Support community stakeholders to implement recommendations from the Revelstoke Food Security Strategy 2022 (FSC22). Work with local organizations to promote and support dignified access to healthy and affordable foods. Increase access to hyper-local, local and regional food that is sustainably and ethically produced through personal, business and municipal government actions. Participate in the Columbia Shuswap Food Collaborative to contribute to regional food system collaboration and shared capacity building. Promote the significance of food quality, cooking and preserving skills, food traditions and the importance of eating together for our health and well-being. Support economic development opportunities related to local food production such as food production business, cooperatives, or partnerships through policy, education and networking. Manage existing MOU's, ensuring that the commitments are being met and aligned with the goals of the FSC22. Work with community partners to strengthen emergency food preparedness and response in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Community Engagement

Conduct community engagement and outreach. Increase youth engagement in food programs. Work with the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke to support their mission of food sovereignty, and amplify educational opportunities of Indigenous Foodways. Increase knowledge of food security, local food systems and actions that can strengthen food security by public officials, community agencies, business owners and residents of Revelstoke. Plan & execute the Farmer's engagement network. Maintain strong relations with the Food Security Committee. Support the nutrition coupon program - redemption & engagement. Support food procurement strategies that help to increase access to quality food sources. Have an understanding and awareness of funding sources and program budgets and ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date program records and all pertinent documentation.

Funding & Grant management

Maintain effective relationships with funding bodies and community organizations; and provide information about the program(s) and the organization to the community at large. Build strategies to stay current with grant cycles and how they can support key programs and stakeholders in Revelstoke. Oversee the implementation and reporting of the United Way School Foods Infrastructure Grant (as well as the progress of the indoor hydroponics program and the greenhouse school foods). Secure project-based grant funding and manage these funded initiatives and the reporting requirements, including but not limited to the annual Resident Directed Grant applications/reporting. Provide monthly reports to the LFI executive director and the board of directors. Write an annual report, summarizing key accomplishments and program highlights (to be provided to Community Economic Development).

Desired education and work experience:

Post-secondary education in food security, community development, nutrition and/or agriculture business or relevant work experience is considered an asset. Experience planning and implementing community-based activities. Experience working with community members experiencing diverse nutritional, physical, social, economic and educational challenges. A strong understanding of community engagement, marketing and communication strategies. Knowledge of current trends in food security and an understanding of food insecurity issues and the effect of poor nutrition on families and communities is an asset. Knowledge of food handling, food production and food safety is an asset. Experience in grant writing and reporting, budgeting and financial acumen.

Ability to professionally engage with community groups of all types and rally them to work collaboratively towards our common goals. Good verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills. Good computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and publishing programs. Respectful, confidential and non-judgmental in her/his work. Reliable, consistent, and mature. Must be able to use their own phone and laptop; and provide their own transportation.

The successful candidate will be awarded an hourly rate of $28-32 per hour based on approximately 20-25 hours per week. This will be a fixed term contract, with the possibility of extension based on available funding.
