JOB SUMMARY
The Food and Nutrition Worker will be responsible for food purchasing, menu planning, preparation, dinner service, weekend meal preparation, safe food storage, and inventory management. She also ensures the maintenance and cleanliness of kitchen and food storage facilities, per Halton Public Health and safe food handling regulations. The F&N Worker prepares for and is present for all kitchen inspections with support from the site Program Manager and a JHSC representative.
Responsibilities
Food and Supply Coordination
Completes weekly grocery shopping in consultation with Program Manager
Completes all purchasing within budget allowance, sourcing best price and quality for all food items
Cleans and stocks kitchen, dining area, pantry, and storage areas, including appliances and shelves according to Public Health and food safety standards
Coordinates with local food banks, donors, and grocery services, to manage ongoing inventory of food and food service items (utensils, small appliances, dishware, etc)
Organizes food orders and deliveries with suppliers.
Makes recommendations to the Program Manager, Safe Shelter Services of her site the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to food, nutrition, and food service
Rotate food stock according to expiry dates regularly
Food Preparation
Plans and prepares special occasion / cultural celebration events and meals
Prepares weekly meal menus in consultation with clients and shelter staff, ensuring all cultural and dietary needs are met. Post weekly menu schedule for accessible viewing by clients and shelter staff.
Prepares meals for clients, including an after-school snack for children who attend daycare, school, or camp
Plans and prepares meals for use during her absence (i.e. weekends, holidays, vacation time).
All food preparation to be carried out with the principles of cost effectiveness, food safety, and minimization of food waste
Administration
Complete online grocery orders
Complete and submit accurate expense forms in a timely manner
Contribute, with the Safe Shelter Manager, to the accurate maintenance of the site's grocery budget worksheet
Health & Safety, Security
Adhere to all health and safety and public health policies and procedures as outlined by the organization to minimize risk
Adhere to all safe food handling requirements and expectations
Adhere to the Safety & Security policies and procedures of Halton Women's Place and actively contribute to the ongoing safety and security of the safe shelter environment
Address daily routine duties as required for kitchen maintenance and safety and as assigned by the Program Manager, Safe Shelter Services
Utilize universal precautions at all times

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Previous experience working with and understanding the experience of women and children escaping violence
Experience in preparing food for a large quantity (20-30) of people.
Experience in menu planning and meal preparation, including accommodating for cultural food preferences and dietary restrictions, such as veganism, halal, and kosher, among others, would be an asset.
Training/experience with all aspects of food industry, including food safety, preparation, storage, and sanitation.
Working knowledge of Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating and how to implement an adherent menu for a large quantity of people
A compassionate, non-judgmental attitude towards different dietary requirements for women and children and an understanding of the impact stress and trauma may have on diet, appetite, and food selection
Proven initiative and effective problem-solving ability
Excellent decision making and strong time management skills.
High ethical standards and integrity consistent with agency values.
Internet search competency with ability to source information, recipes, etc. as needed
Ability to work and multitask in crisis situations
Demonstrated ability to provide non-judgmental and culturally sensitive support to women and children
Willingness to develop knowledge and skills about intimate partner violence and its impact upon children, women, and the community
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor in common spaces and demonstrated history of using emotional supports (peers, manager, EAP program) to debrief challenging situations appropriately
Knowledge of additional languages will be considered an asset
Education
Valid Safe Food Handling Certification (can be obtained upon acceptance of the position)
Some post-secondary education in Hospitality, Food Service or Nutrition, or an acceptable combination of education and experience, will be considered.
