Job Description



Applications are invited for a temporary part-time position of Food & Beverage Research Technician at the Daniel J. Paterson campus. The rate of pay is $22.56 for up to 24 hours per week. Additional hours may be required at peak times during the year such as start or end of term. This position is temporary, and the 6-month appointment is November 2023 through May, 2024. Located at the Daniel J. Patterson campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Food & Beverage Innovation Centre (FBIC) offers a full suite of services to support industry innovation and commercialization of new products and processes. From new recipe and concept development to shelf-life testing, prototyping, and small batch beverage processing, the FBIC pairs industry partners with our highly qualified staff, faculty, recent graduates and students with the right expertise and equipment to meet their needs from concept to shelf. The Food & Beverage Research Technician will work with the Scientific Manager, Research Program Manager, Lab Technologists, Research Leads, Research Assistants, and Industry Partners in operations involving the development and optimization of food and beverage products. This position report to the Research Program Manager.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Planning of product development and scale-up production activities
  • Supporting food quality, food safety (HACCP) and regulatory compliance
  • Coordinating and scheduling of lab facilities
  • Overseeing lab organization and inventory
  • Procurement and sourcing of ingredients, materials and supplies
  • Assisting with purchasing, scheduling and coordinating logistics for various projects and technical services
  • Provide logistical support to the production and research teams
  • Assist with product development and production scale-up
  • Document, edit, report, and track accurate records of assigned projects
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Research Assistants
  • Adhere to and train students on standard operating procedures
  • Attend project-specific meetings and all team meetings as required
  • Participate in documenting procedures and establishing best practices to expand FBIC team capabilities
  • Participate in outreach and knowledge transfer of applied research activities as needed

Qualifications

  • 2-year Diploma in an applicable program (food science, culinary, business etc.) is considered an asset
  • Experience working in the food and beverage industry, or a production setting, is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of food quality and food safety protocols is an asset
  • Demonstrates high level of organization and time management skills
  • Demonstrates great attention to detail, quality, and accuracy
  • Capable of working independently and unsupervised
  • Ability to be a collaborative member of a team
  • Demonstrates an uncompromised commitment to confidentiality
  • Strong communication (written/oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications, including Excel and Word
