Job Summary
The Food Allergy research program at BC Children's Hospital Allergy Clinic is a growing research program with several different studies on the go. Examples of current research projects include various patient registries and chart reviews, biological sample collections, and survey studies.
The Food Allergy Research Assistant will provide research support to the Food Allergy research program at BC Children's Hospital. Tasks include consenting research participants, data entry, and sample collection. These duties are described in more detail below.
The Research Assistant will have a workstation in the Clinical Support Building.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will interact with and report directly to Dr. Lianne Soller, Allergy Research Manager. He or she will work closely with other members of the team, including students, research assistants, administrators, allergists, and nursing staff.
Work Performed
Duties include:
Reviewing eligibility of participants for various research projects related to food allergy
Creating Standard operating procedures for each research project and reviewing/editing them on an ongoing basis.
Reviewing data and entering into REDCap, and liaising with the clinical staff if any data are missing or unclear.
Answering telephone calls and emails from participants and directing questions to the appropriate person (allergist, nurse, etc.)
Consenting families to research studies/e-consenting families
Reviewing allergy clinic schedule and cross-checking participant list to determine when participants are coming to clinic for their visits so that samples may be collected while participant is in clinic
Collecting biological samples (i.e. saliva, nose swab) and providing families with urine and stool collection kits
Providing families with study blood test requisitions and escorting them to the clinical lab for blood draws
Scheduling study appointments
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Required to conduct activities in an ethical manner, working with supervision from Dr. Lianne Soller. Data must be reliably and accurately recorded. Strict confidentiality of all participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to Dr. Lianne Soller.
The work involves tasks which will be assigned by Dr. Lianne Soller. Some tasks may require some additional skills (e.g. telephone calls with participants require good communication skills); the nature of work will change based on the needs of the division but will always be clearly articulated by Dr. Lianne Soller. All problems are referred to Dr. Lianne Soller.
Supervision Received
This person will report to Dr. Lianne Soller. Supervision and direction are accessible at all times and to the extent that the individual needs it.
Supervision Given
This is not a supervisory role.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with chart review/medical charts and their interpretation an asset.
High degree of computer literacy including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and Internet resource use.
Knowledge of Cerner/Powerchart and REDCap an asset.
Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
Good organizational skills.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Attentive to detail, with the ability to work quickly and accurately.
Ability to exercise tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters.
