Summary:
The Head Coach is responsible for leading the Variety Village Flames swim program, fostering a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for para and able-bodied athletes. This role includes designing and implementing individualized training plans, overseeing competition schedules, coach collaboration and support, and maintaining strong relationships with athletes, families, and the community. The Head Coach will collaborate with internal staff and external partners to advance athlete development, support fundraising and grant initiatives, and ensure adherence to organizational policies and safety standards. This position plays a key role in promoting growth and progression from grassroots to competitive interests, representing Variety Village in local and provincial swimming communities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Programming
Creating a fun, safe, and inclusive training environment.
Designing and adapting individualized programming, including yearly, monthly, and weekly training plans based on athletes' goals and interests.
Providing supportive coaching for para and able-bodied athletes.
Developing progression plans for athletes with varied experiences, abilities, and interests to train and compete.
Planning team practices and competition schedules.
Managing approved program budgets.
Assisting with coach training pathways for 1:1 and pre-competitive programs.
Establishing and maintaining parent / guardian relations through effective communication.
Mentoring, and providing feedback to support other coaches and volunteers.
Handling administrative tasks including program development, athlete and family communications, swim meet coordination and entries, concussion compliance, budget tracking, and athlete assessments.
Collaborating with Variety Village staff and supervisors on strategic planning, marketing, vision, goals, fundraising, and key initiatives.
Assisting with media relations to celebrate athlete and team achievements.
Maintaining databases of times and records for both para and able-bodied athletes.
Supporting approved fundraising initiatives in line with Variety policies.
Collaborating on grant applications.
Ensuring safety is prioritized in all activities, in and out of the pool.
Participating in staff Inservice training.
Performing other related duties as required.
Competition
Planning annual meet calendars and training schedules.
Creating and overseeing athletes' competition schedules at age group, regional, provincial, and national levels.
Coordinating competition logistics for athletes and families and attending competitions in a coaching role.
Development
Participating in a leadership role with Swim Ontario, Swimming Canada, and related organizations to advance para swimming.
Researching sport-specific and disability-specific resources to enhance athlete outcomes.
Pursuing ongoing professional development, training, and certifications relevant to the role.
Qualifications:
Up to date CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
Coaching experience with athletes with disabilities as well as able-bodied athletes.
Demonstrating proficiency with HyTek, Meet Manager, or Team Unify (asset).
Showing strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Adapting coaching methods to meet individual athlete needs.
Modeling a respectful, positive, growth-mindset approach to coaching.
Building inclusive, supportive working relationships with staff and volunteers.
