Austin O'Brien high school is seeking a Fitness Instructor to join this 10 month position with 28 working hours per week. This is a temporary position with an expected end date of March 1st, 2027. The Fitness Instructor is responsible for developing and delivering fitness and wellness programs to enhance student athlete skill development. The role involves creating and implementing training programs, providing nutrition expertise, and conducting assessments to support student progress. This position contributes to the overall goals of the Edmonton Catholic Schools by promoting physical health, fostering student engagement, and supporting the sustainability and growth of the sports academy programs.

Responsibilities:




Fitness Activities

Create and adjust exercise routines to meet the evolving needs of students Design programs that align with current and future student development goals Supervise and lead fitness activities in the weight room before school, at lunch, and after school Identify and integrate current fitness trends into programs Lead, train, and provide conditioning and injury management for athletic teams Ensure regular maintenance and timely replacement of fitness equipment


Assessment Activities

Create written student evaluations based on daily training and observations Maintain and update daily progress reports for each student Tabulate and configure performance tests, including concussion baseline testing Provide regular, constructive evaluations reflecting student progress Keep accurate records of testing and scoring results Meet with students regularly to discuss evaluations and provide feedback Participate in meetings with parents and students to discuss progress and improvements Offer information on student status, class performance, and behavior.


School Support & Professional Development Activities



Monitor, maintain, and distribute first aid kits Perform monthly checks on the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine Provide first aid support for athletic teams Engage in special events and celebrations Help colleagues during absences and peak workloads Track attendance for academy activities Stay updated with technical knowledge and certifications through professional development activities.


Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics or a related field Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP); Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA - CSCS) certification Member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED is mandatory Weightlifting certification (NCCP or Eleiko Strength Coach Level 1) strongly preferred Knowledge of various coaching and instructional methods and styles appropriate to student needs Understanding of the physical and physiological demands of sports to devise specific training and conditioning programs Knowledge of body movements, mechanics, and nutrition Understanding of sports injuries, prevention, basic treatment, care, taping, and strapping Knowledge of current and emerging coaching techniques, instructional techniques in a school environment, and project management techniques General knowledge of the Division's operations and business and general understanding of the Division's mission and vision in a faith-based environment.

Proficiency in coaching, mentoring, and training students Strong analytical, evaluation, and problem-solving skills Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to build and maintain a network of contacts Strong leadership skills and the ability to work as part of a team Strong consultation, facilitation, presentation, and instructional skills with the ability to influence Effective time management skills to manage conflicting priorities and balance diverse work demands Ability to build and maintain relationships with students, staff, and other stakeholders Flexibility and adaptability to adjust programs and activities based on student needs and current fitness trends Lead fitness sessions and athletic teams with confidence and authority High attention to detail to ensure accuracy in assessments, records, and equipment maintenance Strong interpersonal skills to support building positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
