We have an exciting opportunity to explore with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture as a Fisheries Technician.The Fisheries Technician, under the supervision of the Fraser\'s Mills Fish Hatchery Supervisor, will assist in the rearing and distribution of brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout and Atlantic salmon to enhance the Province\'s sport fishery. The Fisheries Technician will also assist in the implementation of programs directed towards the management of the Province\'s inland sport fishery.Primary Accountabilities

• Feeding fish and preparing fish feed
• Carrying out fin-fish husbandry practices including cleaning of rearing units.
• Driving three- and five-ton trucks to sites across Nova Scotia for stocking fish.
• Using and maintaining a variety of equipment and infrastructure used in fish hatcheries.
• Monitoring and recording data related fish health, biology, and water quality.

Secondary Accountabilities

• Engaging and working with members of the public and stakeholder groups.
• Supporting management activities such as watershed/ creel surveys, wild fish collections and public information events.

Qualifications and ExperienceThis may be the right job for you if you have the following skills and qualifications:

• College/vocational diploma in a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
• Knowledge and/or experience in fish hatchery production techniques
• Knowledge and/or experience with the collection and recording of biological and environmental data.
• Experience in the operation and general maintenance of motor vehicles, small boats, tools, equipment and infrastructure needed to operate a hatchery.
• Candidates must be proficient in and around lakes, rivers and streams (swimming ability would be an asset)
• A valid driver\'s license is required. Air brakes endorsement for the required driver\'s licence would be an asset and will be required for the job.
• Currently have, or be willing to obtain, Standard Level First Aid/CPR and WHMIS

Asset Qualifications and Experience:

• Knowledge and experience in the rearing and production techniques for salmonids, including fish husbandry, and fish animal health biosecurity
• Air brakes endorsement for the required driver\'s licence would be an asset and will be required for the job.
• Knowledge and experience with the collection, recording, entry, analysis, and reporting of environmental and biological data.
• Knowledge and experience working with word and data processing software (Microsoft Office)
• Knowledge and experience working with the public and stakeholders
• Experience in the upkeep, basic repair, and general maintenance of mechanical and small engine equipment
• Experience and proficiency in basic carpentry and plumbing skills

• Requires the ability to lift and carry heavy loads over rough terrain for prolonged periods in a variety of weather conditions;
