About the Watson Lake Fire Department
The Watson Lake Fire Department is a growing and community-focused organization consisting of one full-time Fire Chief and 22 volunteer firefighters, with ongoing expansion anticipated. We provide fire suppression, rescue, and medical assistance services within Watson Lake, surrounding rural areas, and along more than 1,000 km of highway.
We are seeking a dedicated, team-oriented full-time Firefighter to support our mission in protecting life, property, and the environment.
Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Director of Protective Services (Fire Chief), the full-time Firefighter performs a broad range of emergency response and public safety duties, including:
Responding to structural and wildland fires, motor vehicle collisions, and other emergencies
Assisting EMS with medical emergencies
Conducting search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, water supply operations, and scene support
Participating in fire safety inspections, public education, and pre-incident planning
Maintaining apparatus, tools, equipment, and station facilities
Engaging in regular training and professional development
Leading small teams or tasks when assigned
Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold the following at the time of application:
NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I & II (IFSAC or ProBoard)
NFPA 1002 Apparatus Driver/Operator
Intermediate First Aid, CPR - Level C), AED
Valid Class 3 Driver's Licence with Air Brake Endorsement
Grade 12 or equivalent
Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status
Ability to operate communications equipment
Ability to meet the physical demands of firefighting
Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check
Clean Driver's Abstract
Signed Oath of Confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
Technical rescue training (Auto Extrication, Confined Space, etc.)
Ability to perform effectively in high-stress, physically demanding situations
Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
Critical-thinking and problem-solving ability
Professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic
Computer literacy (Microsoft Office and related software)
Commitment to continuous learning and development
Working Conditions
Full-time position, 3-year term
Shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts
Overtime may be required during major incidents or community emergencies
Exposure to traumatic events, adverse weather, and physically demanding work environments
