Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the development of a candidate pool for the position of permanent full-time career firefighters in Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency.

Under the direction of the Station Officer (Captain), the Firefighter is responsible for firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and other related services. The Firefighter participates in fire prevention and public safety education programs and activities. The Firefighter is responsible for rapidly, efficiently and safely performing various duties under emergency conditions, frequently involving considerable hazard. The Firefighter may be responsible for fire ground and emergency operations until command is assumed by an Officer. In addition, the Firefighter also performs routine maintenance duties in the maintenance of firefighting vehicles, equipment and facilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to emergencies including but not limited to fires, rescues, motor vehicle accidents, public assistance, emergency medical and spills or leaks of hazardous materials
  • Drives and operates firefighting and emergency equipment as assigned
  • Conducts fire prevention inspections and public education programs and activities as assigned
  • Completes and submits various reports and records as required
  • Attends on-duty training sessions and off-site training courses as necessary
  • Maintains equipment in accordance with organizational policies and procedures
  • Responsible for workplace safety as outlined in the NS Occupational Health & Safety Act and organizational policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Responsible for other duties assigned as appropriate to the function and responsibilities of the position
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver's License (or equivalent) with a driver's abstract demonstrating a safe and responsible driving record.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English (oral and written form) under demanding, high-pressure situations
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Ability to work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must meet minimum job performance requirements for Firefighter as per HRFE standards.
  • Must meet minimum job performance requirements for hazardous materials operations as per HRFE standards.
  • Must successfully complete all annual prescribed training.
  • Must successfully complete annual skill evaluations as required.
  • Must meet the physical performance requirements.
  • Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, standard operating guidelines, procedures, policies and applicable Municipal and Provincial Codes, Acts, Regulations, Administrative Orders and Municipal Bylaws.
  • Ability to maintain a current certification in Medical First Responder.
  • Ability to maintain Class 5 license; Class 3a for Firefighter / Engineer.
  • For those in the role of Firefighter / Engineer - Ability to operate Engines and Pumpers to a level of competence as determined and evaluated annually by the Professional Standards, Training & Safety Division. Aerial Drivers also need to maintain specific training for the various aerials in which they are qualified to operate.

KEY INFORMATION TO CONSIDER:
We do not practice lateral transfers. IAFF members from other locals will not retain seniority or rank if hired as a career firefighter by HRFE.
All applicants will commence as a Firefighter 4th Class.

All new hires, upon successful completion of HRFE career firefighter training requirements, will be assigned to an E Platoon fire station based on operational needs. E Platoon shift is 4 days per week between Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 42 hours per week.

WORK STATUS: Permanent Full-Time
HOURS OF WORK: E Platoon shift is 4 days per week between Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 42 hours per week. Hours of work, and station assignments are based on operational requirements.
SALARY: $55,384.95 annually, as per the IAFF Local 268 Collective Agreement
WORK LOCATION: You will be assigned to an E Platoon fire station based on operational needs.
