Job Description

The Fire Safety Supervisor at Vancouver Shipyards is responsible for ensuring the fire safety of all personnel and property in vessel construction. They will work to identify potential fire hazards and to develop strategies to prevent and mitigate them. This will include participating in the development of fire safety training and related programs, inspection of fire and life safety equipment, evaluation/auditing of hot work practices, and supporting the strategic planning of fire suppression and prevention systems as vessels reach full consolidation.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

Supervises and oversees fire safety procedures and personnel, leveraging expert knowledge in fire prevention, detection, and suppression techniques. Lead the implementation of comprehensive fire safety protocols, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and providing ongoing training and support to the team to effectively mitigate fire hazards and ensure a safe working environment. Leads a team in implementing and maintaining fire safety protocols and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards, while providing training and guidance to mitigate fire hazards and promote a safe work environment. Conducts regular inspections of vessels to identify potential fire hazards, inspect fire safety equipment and verify adherence to applicable standards and work processes. Works with Ship Management to correct deficiencies and assist in the planning and implementation of preventative measures. Review sand update fire safety plans to ensure that compliance with all legal and regulatory compliance requirements is maintained. Provides safety training to stakeholders on fire safety practices. Educate workers in the field about potential hazards and controls related to fire risk. Provides training to Fire Watch personnel to carry out Fire Prevention/ fire watch duties throughout the stages of ship construction. Administers daily toolbox talks and work orders to the Fire Watch team. Supports the HSE and Services Managers in planning, executing, and improving fire and emergency preparedness. Provides input and strategic direction on processes and training associated with the risk of fire. Participates and facilitates investigations relating to incidents and emergencies stemming from fires and fire-related events. Assists in the training, planning, and coordination of Seaspan's Fire Brigade and Confined Space Emergency Response Team. Working with contractors to facilitate certified training. Ensures operability of monitor panels and systems used to manage internal alarm and suppression systems. Restructures ERT training program, carry out quarterly confined space rescue drills, oversee the development of Emergency Response Roster. Works alongside Safety Admin in the auditing process for all Emergency Response members - Ensuring training is up-to-date and compliant with WorkSafeBC requirements. Schedules Fire Brigade and Emergency Response Personnel in conjunction with production needs. Inventory, tracks and maintains emergency response rescue gear, facilitates purchasing of new equipment. Creates an asset tracking system of high valued emergency response gear through Hilti tracking system. Works with the Fire Rescue lead to organize joint training exercises with emergency response agencies throughout the north shore.

What you'll bring

Bachelors, Technical Certificate, or other formal training in fire safety and fire suppression systems. Experience working in fire safety or related fields. Knowledge of fire safety regulations, in particular: BC fire code, NFPA Standards, BC Building Codes, and OHSR Requirements. Strong communication skillset including written, verbal, and presentation skills. Ability to work as an integrated member of a team. Familiarity and understanding with integrated fire monitoring systems. Availability to work day and afternoon shifts, depending on work needs. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and access confined spaces without undue increase in risk.

The estimated salary for this position is

$112,500 - $137,500

. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
