Job Description


The Financial Services Department provides all accounting services and financial reporting for the University of Winnipeg. The Financial Reporting Manager is a full-time continuing position. This role is integral to the financial reporting and analysis function, supporting the Director, Financial Reporting and Analysis, in overseeing the preparation, accuracy, and compliance of all financial statements and reporting activities. By collaborating across departments, the successful candidate will ensure timely and precise financial reporting, provide actionable financial insights, and drive continuous improvement in financial processes and reporting efficiency.Responsibilities:The University of Winnipeg Trusteed Pension Plan

  • Lead the preparation and posting of monthly journal entries to accurately record financial activity within the Trusteed Pension Plan.
  • Oversee and perform comprehensive reconciliation of pension-related transactions.
  • Monitor pension cash balances, prepare letters related to redemption or investment of funds.
  • Prepare summary reports for analysis purposes.
  • Calculate and prepare monthly remittance for Defined Benefit contributions and expense reimbursement.
  • Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of pension fund activity to maintain compliance and financial integrity.
  • Prepare quarterly account schedules, reconciliations, and financial statement analysis as support to the quarterly financial statements, analyzing and making recommendations or raising concerns.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements for the Trusteed Pension Plan.
  • Manage the annual audit process and prepare lead sheets, reconciliations and supporting documentation.
The University of Winnipeg Financial Reporting
  • Preparation of monthly and ad hoc journal entries.
  • Review and approve all journal entries prepared by staff, provide guidance, mentorship and feedback regarding errors.
  • Oversee the monthly reconciliation process for general ledger accounts, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
  • Manage the reconciliation of intercompany transactions between the University of Winnipeg, the University of Winnipeg Foundation, the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation, and Downtown Commons.
  • Oversee the tracking, recording, and reconciliation of GIC purchases, maturities, and interest revenue, ensuring compliance with financial reporting standards.
  • Calculate and process payments to UWSA for student fees owed.
  • Manage month-end processes.
  • Responds to financial related queries.
  • Assist with the preparation of quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements and with the preparation of quarterly and annual reports for the Province of Manitoba.
  • Assist with the preparation of variance analysis of consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Lead the preparation of lead sheets, supporting documentation, and schedules essential for the preparation of consolidated financial statements.
  • Collaborate in the year-end planning process, managing the coordination and delegation of responsibilities.
  • Calculate and post quarterly and annual financial accruals, ensuring proper accounting cut-off procedures are adhered to.
  • Proactively identify, recommend and implement improvements to financial reporting processes, workflows, and internal controls.
  • Provide analytical insights to support decision-making and organizational planning.
  • Manage the annual University of Winnipeg financial statement audit process.
  • Prepare lead sheets, reconciliations and supporting documentation, creating a complete and accurate year-end file for review by the auditors.
  • Manage and supervise the reconciliation of general ledger accounts, ensuring discrepancies are promptly identified and resolved.
  • Manage year-end audit checklist, coordinating with staff to ensure tasks and analyses are completed and submitted to the auditors prior to start of audit.
  • Manage submission of working papers to auditors.
  • Respond to auditor inquiries and ensure timely resolution of any issues identified, elevate major issues.
  • Provides backup to the Director, Financial Reporting and Analysis as requested.
  • Participates in special projects as requested.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelorxe2x80x99s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience in an accounting services environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing consolidated financial statements and managing comprehensive reconciliations.
  • Experience identifying and implementing financial reporting process improvements.
  • Experience reading and interpreting accounting standards and using these along with professional judgement and experience, to determine appropriate accounting treatments.
  • Experience working in Higher Education or the Public Sector with knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) would be an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial accounting principles
  • Experience with pension plan reporting would be an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to communicate complex financial data effectively to senior management and other stakeholders.
  • Must have advanced proficiency in the use of the MS Office Suite and Financial Accounting Software. Experience with MS Dynamics NAV or Business Central, CaseWare and/or Prophix would be an asset.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within the policies and goals of the unit.
  • Must be organized and have the ability to meet strict deadlines and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
