We are seeking an experienced

Financial Controller

to join our finance team. This is a remote-first position, with in-office/onsite days expected as required to the satisfaction of the client in Kitchener, and in Toronto.

Standard working hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (ET).

Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will oversee the accounting department and lead a team of direct reports. The ideal candidate will take full ownership of day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, cash flow management, accounts payable and receivable, and monthly draw cycles.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Treasury & Cash Flow Management

Oversee cash flow forecasting, treasury operations, and banking relationships to ensure liquidity and financial stability. Manage all outgoing payments, including vendor invoices, trade payments, and tax obligations, in compliance with Construction Act timelines. Ensure timely payment of bills, taxes, and payroll remittances in coordination with HR and the internal HRIS system Lead the early payment discount program, monitor treasury KPIs, and maintain strong working relationships with financial institutions.

2. Financial Reporting, Compliance & Taxation

Maintain the accuracy and integrity of all financial data and reports. Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial statements with commentary on key KPIs and project performance. Oversee monthly HST filings, source deductions, and other statutory tax remittances. Ensure compliance with ASPE standards and Construction Act requirements, including the issuance of Notices of Non-Payment when applicable. Lead the year-end review process with external accountants and ensure all reconciliations and working papers are complete. Oversee filing of quarterly WSIB, EHT and Corporate Tax Installments. Oversee evolving compliance needs as organization grows

3. Construction Accounting & Draws

Manage monthly progress draws, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission to clients. Oversee job costing, WIP schedules, holdbacks, lien waivers, and subcontractor compliance. Partner with Project Managers to align billing, budgets, and cash flow forecasts. Maintain relationship with client accounts payable teams to ensure payment with contract terms.

4. Finance-Operations Integration

Serve as the bridge between Finance, Operations, and Executive leadership, translating financial insights into operational strategy. Support Project and Operations Managers with budgeting, cost controls, and financial accountability. Liaise with Preconstruction and banking partners to support RFP submissions and project financing documentation.

5. Process Improvement & Leadership

Lead and mentor the finance team (AP, AR, and reporting) to ensure high performance and accountability. Continuously enhance financial systems, ERP configurations, and internal controls. Identify opportunities to automate reporting, streamline workflows, and strengthen documentation standards.

6. Strategic & Analytical Support

Analyze key financial metrics such as cash flow, margin performance, and budget variances to guide decision-making. Collaborate with the CFO on strategic planning, ERP deployment, and ad-hoc financial modeling. Develop and maintain management dashboards and data-driven insights for leadership review.

7. Professionalism & Culture

Communicate with professionalism, integrity, and clarity across all levels of the organization. Support the CFO in prioritizing strategic initiatives, ensuring financial discipline and long- term value creation. Lead by example--promoting a culture of transparency, collaboration, and operational excellence.

Qualifications:

Experience in the construction industry is essential for this position 4 - 7+ years of accounting experience, including leadership in a Controller or senior finance role CPA designation (CA, CMA, or CGA) in good standing or near completion Background in construction or real estate development with strong job costing and project accounting knowledge Solid understanding of ASPE and Ontario Construction Act requirements Hands-on experience with HST filings, payroll remittances, and tax payments Proven ability to manage cash flow, treasury operations, and banking relationships Skilled in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., Sage 300, QBO, Jonas) and advanced Excel use Strong communication, leadership, and team management skills Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment Professional, ethical, and committed to accuracy and continuous improvement
