POSITION SUMMARY
The Financial Controller provides leadership and oversight within the finance department, supporting day-to-day financial operations, reporting, and compliance. This role ensures sound financial management practices and provides mentorship and guidance to the finance team. The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting expertise, experience with QuickBooks Online, and a deep commitment to community service and collaboration.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Oversight and Leadership
Lead the finance department team, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to ensure high performance and accountability.
Supervise financial operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general accounting functions.
Maintain an accurate and up-to-date chart of accounts and ensure alignment with organizational and program reporting needs.
Support the CFO in developing and implementing financial policies, internal controls, and reporting frameworks.
Accounts Payable and Banking
Oversee the accounts payable process to ensure timely and accurate payments, proper authorization, and compliance with organizational controls.
Monitor cash flow and bank balances to ensure adequate liquidity and proper allocation of funds across programs.
Review and reconcile bank transactions regularly to ensure accuracy and detect any discrepancies.
Approve statutory remittances, benefits payments, and other financial obligations in coordination with the CFO.
Payroll and HR Coordination
Oversee payroll processing to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with employment standards and funding agreements.
Verify staff time records, leave balances, and payroll allocations prior to posting in accounting systems.
Collaborate with HR to ensure employee data, pay splits, and benefits deductions are accurately recorded.
Accounts Receivable and Funders
Monitor receivables and maintain communication with funders to ensure timely collection of revenues.
Ensure funder financial reports are accurate, complete, and submitted in accordance with contract requirements.
Support program managers in developing and reviewing budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.
Maintain strong relationships with funders by ensuring transparency and accountability in all reporting.
Financial Reporting, Compliance, and Close Processes
Lead the monthly and year-end financial close processes, ensuring that all journal entries, reconciliations, and financial schedules are completed accurately and on time.
Prepare and review monthly financial statements, variance analyses, and internal management reports for accuracy and clarity.
Support the CFO in preparing year-end audit schedules and liaising with external auditors.
Ensure compliance with financial regulations, internal controls, accounting standards, and funder requirements.
Develop and maintain comprehensive accounting documentation, including financial policies, procedures, and memos.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Develop supportive and professional rapport with Finance team and Inuuqatigiit Centre staff;
Manage conflict resolution when required;
Work closely with the Chief Financial Officer and members of the management team; and
Participate in Inuuqatigiit Centre mandatory events.
EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS
Communicate regularly with accounting partners regarding accounting services and systems (e.g. bank, payroll services, Simply Accounting, IT support, systems training, etc.);
Communicate with managers and staff regarding issues that arise and systems relating to financial and accounting matters; and
Communicate with service providers.
DEADLINES
Adhere to all deadlines intrinsic to the accounting cycle and systems;
Adhere to monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting requirements; and
Support staff in respecting and adhering to deadlines related to their positions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work regular and consistent weekly hours of work;
Required to work weekends and evenings; to meet deadlines; and some travel to meetings may be required.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL
Demonstrate stress resistance and stamina in the management of accounting system data and internal reports;
Manage stress and demonstrate stamina to direct staff and programs as required;
Ability to function effectively in a high stress, high noise environment.
Demonstrate stress resistance and stamina in addressing multiple demands; and
Physical ability to access three-story buildings.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Knowledge of Inuit culture, values, traditions, and community;
Experience working in Inuit or Indigenous community as asset;
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English;
Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations;
Knowledge of accounting and related systems (e.g. Simply Accounting, Sage, Ceridian Payroll, RBC Express and on-line banking.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree or diploma in Accounting or Commerce
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management.
Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel.
Demonstrated experience managing AP, AR, payroll, fund accounting and financial reporting.
Medical certification of good health;
Up-to-date immunization records and TB test, if applicable;
Proof of COVID-19 vaccine (dose 1 & 2) and booster;
CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to become certified); and
Possession of a valid driver's license required.
