Position: Financial Analyst, Financial Planning & Analysis

Reports to: Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis

Position Term: Full Time Permanent

Job purpose

This is an exciting opportunity for a curious, data-driven, and financially savvy individual with an analyst mindset to partner with a variety of people to drive our mission forward. The Financial Analyst is a member of the Financial & Business Advisory community of practice that is responsible for financial planning & analysis, modelling & forecasting, and budget & reporting. This role will embed and serve as a trusted business partner to internal client groups in an Agile working environment.

We are seeking an individual who thrives in the vagaries of ideation and can discern key assumptions, constraints, and develop models; who listen well and ask probing questions; is a key team player with an ethos of sharing knowledge; and is an excellent communicator with a passion to serve.

Duties and responsibilities

1. Financial Modelling

  • Sit with internal client groups in the development of fundraising campaigns and appeals and develop financial models including sensitivity analysis to determine key profitability or cost targets.
  • Work with members of the Analytics and Insights team to understand key assumptions/variables.
  • Provide business acumen in contributing to campaign proposals.
  • Provide insight and recommendations from financial forecasting in areas of financial and business risk and planning gaps that need to be addressed.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve upon tools, data and methodologies currently used to produce long term forecasts, including financial models, databases and data tools that are essential for operational and financial forecasting.
  • Integrate financial forecasts from specific business cases and projects from the business into organizational forecasts.
2. Budgeting and Reporting
  • Actively participate in the annual and half-year budgeting process by representing internal client groups in developing revenue and expense budget targets.
  • Provide direct support to internal client groups during the budgeting process twice a year. This support will be in the form of:
  • Communicating budget and projection business rules/guidelines and other corporate policies and Finance Business Rules (i.e. GAAP on timing of expense recognition or classification of capital expenditures vs. operating expense).
  • Drawing upon knowledge of client groups to help develop revenue and expense budgets.
  • Providing information on revenue/expense details, historical trending and summary or detailed reports of group revenue/expenses.
  • Provide TM1 coaching and support or assist with entering requirements in TM1.
  • Aid in the preparation of organizational-wide documents communicating the final proposed budget as needed (e.g. World Vision Canada's Budget book and presentation for the Board).
  • Prepare and update regular reporting against budget numbers for internal client groups and communicate areas that warrant attention.
  • Participate in regular financial statement review meetings with rest of Finance team to discuss variances and propose action items.
  • Advising internal clients on financial and business insight by performing ad hoc analyses including profitability analyses, cost per acquisition, ROI, business cases, detailed GL analyses.
3. Learning and Sharing within the Business Advisory Community of Practice
  • Led by the Manager, Financial & Business Advisory, this community of practice aims to share knowledge amongst the team and extend to the greater Finance team to:
  • Understand key issues in the internal client groups across the organization in achieving target numbers and executing on the organizational priority areas.
  • Elevate each other's skills on modelling, forecasting, and reporting, and in turn assist with lifting capabilities across the greater Finance team.
  • Learning external best practices and new developments in key tools used in the organization
  • Identifying inefficient or ineffective process steps that can be improved upon.
  • Participating as a subject matter expert in greater organizational or Finance projects related to planning, budgeting and reporting.
  • Possibly represent WVC in finance-focused working groups for the rest of the WVI partnership.
Other duties and opportunities

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting and/or Finance.
  • 3+ years experience working in roles such as financial planning & analysis, business advisory, or working in a start-up.
  • Curious and strategic thinker with strong business acumen.
  • Strong mathematical & analytical skills; enjoys working with large amounts of data with ability to translate financial information to business consequences and solutions.
  • Ability to work as a team player and independently as needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attitude of mission-aligned customer service.
  • Self-starter and initiator - not afraid of working in nebulous situations.
Advantageous if you have any of the following:
  • Working with BI software (PowerBI, Tableau, Sisense) or TM1.
  • Excel macro writing.
  • SQL coding.
