Position Title: Financial Analyst

Team and Location: Finance Shared Services - Calgary, AB

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Accounting Manager, Fixed Asset Manager and Banking Supervisor, the Financial Analyst, will be a key member of the Record to Report (R2R) team in Finance Shared Services (FSS) and will work with a team of other Financial Analysts and liaise with finance teams from all of Parkland's business segments. The Finance Shared Services team leverages innovation to drive efficient and effective processes to support Parkland's goals. The Financial Analyst will be involved in preparing account reconciliations, assist in complex accounting transactions, integration of new acquisitions, reconciliation of certain balance sheet accounts, performing routine corporate accounting processes, fixed asset processing, acquisitions, sales, disposals, as well as assist with bank related transactions and reconciliations. The Financial Analyst will assist in process and system improvement projects as well as special and ad-hoc projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, process, maintain, monitor, and reconcile GL accounts, transaction matching and investigate issues.
  • Take ownership of the relevant accounting, processing and reporting functions of the Finance Shared Services function.
  • Facilitating bank reconciliations as well as any bank related transactions
  • Coding transactions and process routine journal entries for review, though, identifying issues and errors, investigate discrepancies, book relevant adjustments, and develop resolutions to prevent future issues and errors.
  • Processing asset additions and disposals, transfers, WIP to capital, internal labor capitalization, authority for expenditure (AFE) approvals, accruals, and consolidation journal entries in accordance with IFRS and company accounting policy.
  • Assist in preparing Property, Plant, & Equipment, and Intangible working papers - continuity schedules and additions and retirement reports.
  • Proactively elevating capital asset issues to Manager or assisting to provide expertise to the organization; work closely with various departments impacted by capital assets (e.g., property tax, commodity tax, internal audit, business segments (retail, commercial and wholesale, and distribution), procurement, fleet, operations and legal).
  • Timely and accurately perform the month-end close process.
  • Prepare lead sheets and perform analysis on lead sheets such as analytics and variance analysis in a meaningful way.
  • Prepare quality working papers and documentation for review.
  • Assist in IT projects such as OneStream account reconciliation, RPA and other reconciliation tools in automation and streamlining consolidation process, including monthly update of PPE and Intangible input forms in OneStream.
  • Respond to and support external and internal auditor requests throughout the year. Prepare high-quality working papers and documentation for review.
  • Be a trusted and reliable resource who will work closely with various teams across Parkland.
Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with the Technical Accounting (TA) Group on accounting issues and ensure complex or non-routine transactions are accounted for in accordance with IFRS.
  • Work collaboratively in the Finance Shared Services team to drive operational excellence and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Working closely with Financial Reporting Group and Fixed asset group to get required information for preparation of internal reporting.
  • Work closely with the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) Group on information needed for purpose of management reporting and analysis.
  • Work closely with team members from Tax, Treasury, Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Integrations, Procurement, Communications etc., to support monthly/quarterly deliverables and projects as required.
  • Eagerness to learn and manage relationships to ensure the team's success.
Qualifications:
  • University/college degree in finance, business, accounting, or related area.
  • Minimum 2+ years of relevant accounting or auditing experience in general accounting, reconciliations fixed asset accounting, and journal entries.
  • Experience working in a strong customer service focused environment.
  • CPA, CA Designation (or working towards), but not required.
  • Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne ERP or another ERP system.
  • Experience with OneStream is advantageous but not required.
  • Experience of accounting in relevant non-financial industries (e.g., retail, manufacturing, marketing, distribution, technology, downstream oil, and gas, etc.).
Skills and Attributes
  • Understanding of fixed assets accounting under IFRS (specifically IAS 16), including construction in progress and capitalization of labor.
  • Understanding of CRA tax rules relating to fixed assets, including CCA classes.
  • Excellent accounting analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to proactively identify, understand and grasp issues, problems and the overall "big picture".
  • Ability to be fluid in a flexible working environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrating an ability to make complex issues and processes clear and understandable to key stakeholders and decision makers.
  • Excellent Excel skills - must be comfortable working with large volumes of data using advanced excel functions.
  • Willingness to learn, improve existing processes, and confront new challenges.
  • Self-motivated problem solver with a relentless focus on high quality results and operational excellence.
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate teams when working with all business units and operations.
  • Attention to detail with ability to manage time, work independently, and multi-task.
