plays a pivotal role in the company's financial strategy with a significant FP&A focus. This position is crucial in supporting financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and operational decision-making in our high-growth, dynamic environment. Working directly with ownership and executive leadership, the Finance Manager will help shape the financial future of Spearhead by providing critical insights that drive both short-term decisions and long-term planning. This role offers exceptional visibility across all aspects of the business and provides a unique opportunity to directly influence the company's trajectory during an exciting period of expansion and transformation.
The Finance Manager will lead complex financial modeling, variance analysis, and executive reporting while managing the annual budgeting process and developing robust forecasting models. Key responsibilities include conducting scenario planning, creating executive-level financial presentations, maintaining key performance indicators, and performing detailed profitability analysis across business segments.
This position manages up to 3 direct reports, providing mentorship, training, and performance management while delegating and ensuring quality control of all financial deliverables. The Finance Manager will be responsible for developing team capabilities, coordinating workload distribution, and fostering a collaborative environment that supports professional growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting and Planning for Expansion
Develop working plans with bankers and funding organizations to support cash needs during the construction phase
Work closely with the Finance Director and Ownership to support funding claims and ensure these match expectations. This involves gathering the appropriate documents, making the claims and requests in a timely manner, working to resolve any queries from banks, vendors, and internal customers
Understand the new business process and anticipate reporting requirements to satisfy stakeholders, including but not limited to bank covenants, monthly financial statements, and funding reports
Budgeting & Cash Flow Management
Create and manage the company's budget, ensuring financial discipline while supporting rapid expansion
Work with business partners for new budget initiatives based on the expansion program
Monitor and forecast cash flow, ensuring enough liquidity for operations and strategic initiatives. Raise any concerns and solutions to ownership as needed
Provide insights on break-even analysis, funding runway, and capital allocation
Identify areas for cost optimization, including raw materials, labour, transportation, and production efficiency
Develop real-time tracking systems for burn rate and runway calculations, working with leadership to adjust spending as needed
Financial Planning & Growth Modeling
Develop and maintain dynamic financial models that support scaling production, optimizing unit costs, and forecasting market demand
Work closely with leadership to model different business scenarios, including revenue growth, cost structures, and investment needs
Track and analyze customer acquisition costs (CAC), lifetime value (LTV), gross margins, and EBITDA
Financial Reporting
Oversee preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements, board packs, and management reporting in accordance with accounting standards
Design and implement reporting frameworks including KPI dashboards tracking
Ensure compliance with internal controls, audit requirements, and external reporting standards
Manage regulatory filings and audit close-out processes
Business Partnering & Strategic Decision Support
Work closely with fabrication, digital planning, and procurement to provide data-driven insights on pricing, supply chain, and cost efficiency
Assist in evaluating new production technologies, automation opportunities, and capital investments in equipment
Support the development of pricing strategies, balancing profitability with competitive positioning in the mass timber market
Team Leadership & Management
Provide ongoing coaching, training, and professional development opportunities to direct reports, fostering career growth and skill enhancement
Strategically delegate tasks and manage team workload to ensure efficient operations and timely deliverable completion
Establish and maintain quality control processes for all financial deliverables produced by the team
Ad-hoc Analysis & Special Projects
Set up ERP and financial reporting systems to streamline operations as the company scales
Conduct deep-dive analysis on supply chain risks, raw material procurement strategies, and sustainability initiatives
Support grant applications, subsidies, and tax incentives related to sustainable wood manufacturing and green building initiatives
Risk Management
Collaborate with Operations to systematically identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor operational, financial, and compliance risks across Spearhead
Conduct regular evaluations of current insurance coverage adequacy and work directly with insurers to ensure all requirements are met and coverage remains appropriate for evolving business needs

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Attributes
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field
10+ years of progressive experience in finance or accounting in a high-growth environment
2+ years of experience managing people and leading a team
Strong technical skills with advanced proficiency in Excel, financial modeling, and ERP systems
Advanced Excel modelling skills, including financial modeling and scenario analysis
Proficient with accounting systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, or similar)
Familiarity with financial reporting tools (Power BI, Tableau) and CRM systems (HubSpot, Salesforce)
Understanding of unit economics, COGS breakdown, and margin analysis for manufacturing companies
Prior work in timber, engineered wood, or sustainable materials industries, preferred
Exposure to grant applications and administration, or government incentives, preferred
Background in timber, engineered wood, or manufacturing, preferred
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion
Schedule and Working Conditions
Ability to work 8:30-5:00, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch each day
Ability to work on-site at Spearhead offices
Manual dexterity to operate a computer and other common office equipment on a regular basis
Ability to work sitting or standing at a desk for work shifts
Compensation and Benefits
Estimated pay range is $85-$116K, commensurate with experience and qualifications
