Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) was established in 1991 to provide culturally appropriate healthcare for Indigenous people in Vancouver. Located in the Downtown Eastside, VAHS serves some of the most marginalized populations in the country. Our approach is grounded in Indigenous worldviews and focuses on holistic care, addressing the social determinants of health rather than just treating illness.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Finance Controller
to join our leadership team. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Finance Controller oversees all financial operations, ensures compliance with GAAP and funding requirements, and provides leadership in budgeting, reporting, audits, and internal controls.
This is a critical leadership role supporting the long-term financial stability and growth of VAHS.
Key Responsibilities
Manage full-cycle accounting and financial operations for VAHS and related entities
Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and funding partners
Develop and implement internal controls, policies, and procedures
Supervise and support finance staff in a collaborative environment
Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and Indigenous funding agreements and reporting requirements
Coordinate year-end processes and external audits
Collaborate with other departments to support strategic decision-making
Monitor financial performance and recommend improvements
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
CPA or CGA designation preferred
Minimum 5 years of progressive finance/accounting experience, ideally in a non-profit setting
Strong knowledge of financial management, reporting, and regulatory compliance
Advanced computer skills with experience in multiple ERPs (Microsoft Dynamics, Penny payroll, or equivalent)
Expert Excel abilities
, including pivot tables, functions, formulas, and if/then statements
Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills
Audit experience at a Big Six firm considered an asset
