Employment Opportunity The Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council (MAPC), in partnership with the Clean Foundation\xc2\xa9, is seeking a candidate with experience or understanding about; natural sciences and/or applied sciences, data input, field work, as well as fisheries as it relates to freshwater fish identification, to join our team for a 4-month (15-week) term position, as the Summer Field Technician under the Salmon Comparative
Assessment Project. MAPC is the intergovernmental forum of the Native Council of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick Aboriginal
Peoples Council, and Native Council of Prince Edward Island serving the needs, aspirations, and rights of Mi\'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Peskotomuhkahti Indigenous Peoples continuing on their traditional ancestral homelands throughout modem day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island,
Canada. The partner Native Councils coordinate through the Maritime Aboriginal Aquatic Resources
Secretariate (MAARS) on issues involving aquatic resources, oceans management, the fishing industry, aquaculture, and governance. To be considered for this role, the candidate must be:
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in
Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
  • Must be working towards a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree or Community college in a relevant field (exceptions made to those with relevant experience and/or intending to attend a post-secondary institution the following year)
Requirements/qualifications that the candidate would have:
  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • General understanding of natural sciences and/or applied sciences;
  • Willingness to learn new concepts, disseminate scientific literature, and provide insight;
  • Critical thinking;
  • Enthusiasm for working outdoors.
  • Experience with water quality monitoring and/or familiarity with Atlantic salmon biological requirements is an asset.
  • An interest in environmental science is an asset
  • Experience and or licensing to operate off-road vehicles is an asset
The Lead Field Technician is responsible for working closely with the Project Manager complete deliverables of the project, including:
  • Water quality monitoring, including data collection, input, and management;
  • Habitat and rapid stream assessments;
  • Collection of water chemistry samples;
  • Calibrate and maintain critical field equipment, such as field vehicle, YSI ProDSS, eDNA backpack sampler, and similar;
  • Participate in the completion of the habitat scoring model;
  • Capturing imagery of field activities and organizing the documentation of activities;
  • Contributing to the safe work culture and participating in safety exercises;
  • Communicating the project objectives and accomplishments with people from various backgrounds;
  • Coordinating a community outreach event.
MAPC is seeking a multi-disciplinary minded person, passionate about the environment and
Indigenous Peoples\' rights and aspirations, who can not only undertake the work described above, but also become involved in other MAPC-MAARS initiatives. The Summer Field Technician will work predominately in the field at the project sites located in
Colchester County, with office work in Truro, NS. The office work, which is primarily data management and input, can accommodate remote working with discussion between the employee, the project manager, and the Executive Director . The schedule of work is Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, though the weekend of the project\xe2\x80\x99s community engagement event will take place on a weekend. Remuneration for this position is set at 19.25$/hour for 35 hours/week, May 1st-Aug 11th, 2023 Aboriginal Hiring Preference Policy is in place.
