This position is classified under the Grant and Trust Administrative & Technical GroupTemporary full-time from 04/01/2025 to 03/31/2027If you are a current employee of the University of Guelph you must apply on the internal Career Page in order to be considered as an internal applicant.General PurposeEstablished in 2008, the Morwick G360 Groundwater Research Institute (Morwick G360) represents the University of Guelph's response to global challenges related to safe and sustainable water supplies that support human populations and ecosystems. With an annual operating budget of ~$5M, Morwick G360 leads multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects focused on advancing knowledge and technologies for bedrock groundwater systems. For more information, visit .Reporting to the Director of the Morwick G360 Institute and the Senior Field Manager, the Field and Equipment Technologist will play a key role in the management of existing specialty research equipment, but also in the creation of new and/or improved above and below ground research equipment and the mentoring and training of students on the use of this equipment.Duties and ResponsibilitiesField Work & Implementation - 50%

  • Under the supervision of the MG360 Senior Field Manager and other personnel, organize and conduct fieldwork activities at local, national, and international project sites.
  • Utilize problem-solving and hands-on expertise to adapt and succeed in dynamic field conditions.
  • After training, perform tasks such as geophysical logging, water level measurements, rock core sampling, groundwater and gas sampling, and multilevel system installations.
  • Communicate effectively with MG360 Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and team members regarding activities, data, and results.
  • Provide updates and insights to ensure alignment with project goals and timelines.
Data Quality Evaluation and Capture - 30%
  • Organize and input field data into electronic data systems.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on collected data.
  • Following existing procedures and supporting modifications.
  • Occassionally prepare raw data outputs in the form of figures and tables to support research and reporting.
Equipment Maintenance, Design & Troubleshooting - 20%
  • Perform routine maintenance on hydrogeological and geophysical tools and methods.
  • Collaborate with MG360 personnel to develop and implement design improvements for equipment and methodologies.
  • Apply strong mechanical skills (machining, plumbing, and electrical skills are assets) to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and design flaws.
  • Work with equipment manufacturers and MG360 staff to create new parts and equipment to address research challenges.
  • Develop innovative solutions to enhance the functionality of monitoring systems used in MG360 activities.
Requirements
  • A college diploma, a university degree is preferred, with a major in drilling, mechanical, geological or civil engineering, hydrogeology, or environmental science, and at least 1 year of related experience.
  • Previous experience in hydrogeology or a related field through coursework, internships, or research projects is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience working with varied mechanical equipment is required.
  • Demonstrated interest in working outdoors and solving technical challenges while mentoring and training students.
  • Familiarity with groundwater sampling, well installation, and geophysical surveys is desirable.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel or GIS and experience in QA/QC processes.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to challenging field conditions.
  • Class G Driver's License is required.
  • Experience with trailer towing would be an asset.
