The Role
Reporting to the Network Maintenance Manager, the Fiber Splicer / Network Maintenance Technician will work directly with our fiber splicing team and our Operations department to perform network maintenance activities on ROHL's fiber optic network and our third-party network builds. Additionally, this role will be responsible for GPS field data collection activities and line locating activities to ensure accurate mapping and infrastructure documentation.

A Day in the Life
No two days are the same in the life of a Fiber Splicer / Network Maintenance Technician at ROHL. Whether you're working on new fiber optic installations, repairing damaged cables, or performing routine maintenance on our network, you'll be in the field, often in various environments. Your duties will include:
Organize and dispatch yourself to your assigned projects and ensure tasks are completed
Submit project progress reports to the Fiber Splicing/Network Maintenance Manager
Read and follow engineer's instructions and specifications
Interpret buried underground and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps and in the field with clarity and detail
Make recommendations for changes in running line or construction methodologies and submit revisions to Network Maintenance Manager using CAD, Visio, or another suitable program
Troubleshoot, test, splice, validate, and repair both loose tube and ribbon optic cable in both indoor and outdoor settings
Perform accurate cable termination for all patch panels and network equipment
Construct proper splice case including, but not limited to, grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing
Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams
Enter and maintain outside plant records and prepare engineering field notes
Performs routine maintenance and recognize and repair route issues including Hand Hole cleanup, sign placement and weed control
Conduct field investigations to accurately locate and mark ROHL's fiber optic network using specialized equipment such as electromagnetic locators and GPS mapping tools
Point of Presence maintenance, network equipment installation and commissioning
Loading/unloading supplies and materials from trucks in Acheson yard using a forklift and reporting incoming/outgoing supplies and materials received and shipped
Troubleshoot, test, splice, validate, and repair both loose tube and ribbon optic cable in both indoor and outdoor settings
Conduct GPS field data collection activities to capture accurate geographic coordinates of telecom infrastructure
Utilize specialized GPS equipment and software to ensure precise data collection and adherence to project specifications
Collaborate with construction personnel and project managers to plan and execute field data collection schedules effectively
May be required to operate drones to conduct aerial inspections, capture high-resolution imagery, and assist in mapping utility infrastructure
Analyze drone-captured data to identify potential issues and improve network maintenance planning.

The following are required for this role:
Minimum 3 years' experience in OSP/ISP Fiber Optic Splicing and testing and a solid knowledge of OSP fiber construction
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, and other job specific programs such as EXFO FastReporter
GPS and Line Locating experience a definite asset
Advanced drone pilot license is highly preferred and considered a valuable asset for this role
Must hold a valid Class 5 driver's license with clean driver's abstract
Strong time management, leadership, and communication skills
Ability to travel out of town, work away from home, and be available for evening and weekend work and be available on short notice and/or be on call when required
Self-disciplined, motivated and organized with strong attention to detail
Ability to solve problems and work independently
