Your Challenge

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada\'s largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for a Technical Officer (TO) with expertise in the operation and maintenance of bioreactors and associated equipment used in fermentation processes. The TO will work in a team environment with researchers and other technical personnel to provide technical support for diverse research projects that employ microbes to transform renewable biomass into higher value products. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The successful candidate will play an important role within the NRC\'s Aquatic and Crop Resource Development (ACRD) Research Centre\'s expanding fermentation and bioprocessing capabilities in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The TO will represent the core technical expert in the care and maintenance of bioreactors ranging in size from bench to pilot scale, including training of staff and general facility operation. Other responsibilities include technical support for stakeholder R&D projects, and input into process development and scale up for diverse microbes.

Education

1. This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor\'s degree in bioprocess engineering or related discipline.

Experience

1. Significant experience in the maintenance, care and operation bioreactors from bench to 1000L scale, as well as routine downstream processing and recovery equipment.
2. Experience with the implementation of fermentation protocols for the production of bioproducts and related material, including troubleshooting equipment and experimental conditions.
3. Experience in microbial culture under sterile conditions, and in the preparation of media and component reagents.
4. Experience in analysis, interpretation and reporting of data.
5. Experience working in a project management focused multi-disciplinary research environment.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

1. Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot bioreactors up to 1000L scale, as well as routine downstream processing and recovery equipment.
2. Ability to provide technical support in the design, implementation, optimization and troubleshooting of research activities related to bioprocessing and biomass conversion.
3. Knowledge of good laboratory practices and scientific record keeping and ability to perform data analysis, report findings and qualify results in the context of reported literature, for reports, scientific posters and publications.
4. Ability to train and assist new personnel (junior staff, guest workers, students) in the use of bioreactors and other facility equipment
5. Ability to perform equipment maintenance, schedule service visits, maintain laboratory facilities in working order, order lab supplies, maintain chemical inventories, track consumables and equipment usage, identify potential safety hazards in the laboratory and to implement corrective measures, safely handle and dispose of chemicals, and establish/maintain standard operating protocols for the laboratory.

Compensation

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
