Job Summary
The
Feline Care Specialist
provides leadership, direction, and hands-on care to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and client service at the Fraser Valley Humane Society. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this role oversees day-to-day feline care operations, staff and volunteer coordination, and program management to support the organization's mission and values.
Key ResponsibilitiesAnimal Care & Operations
Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and the public.
Ensure proper handling, feeding, and cleaning routines for all animals in care.
Observe and monitor animals daily for signs of illness, stress, or behavioral changes.
Administer prescribed treatments and medications under veterinary direction.
Provide compassion, enrichment, and socialization to shelter cats to promote well-being and adoptability.
Participate as part of the assessment team in medical euthanasia decisions when necessary.
Assist the public in pet selection and provide knowledgeable guidance on behavior and responsible care.
Perform administrative duties, including answering phones, responding to inquiries, processing adoptions, maintaining records, and ordering supplies.
Leadership & Supervision
Foster a collaborative and positive work environment among staff and volunteers.
Provide mentorship, guidance, and feedback to animal care staff.
Represent the organization professionally at community events and outreach activities to strengthen its community profile.
Planning & Program Management
Oversee efficient daily operations related to feline care and shelter management.
Ensure all records, including animal histories, adoptions, veterinary treatments, and statistics, are accurate and up to date.
Maintain privacy and confidentiality of client and volunteer information.
Provide monthly operational reports to the Board of Directors.
Oversee the Foster Program, including recruitment, coordination, and home visits as required.
Ensure shelter equipment and facilities are maintained in good working condition.
Support planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs, services, and special projects.
Human Resources & Training
Assess staffing needs and help ensure adequate cat care coverage.
Provide orientation, training, and ongoing support to new team members.
Promote a positive, safe, and respectful work environment in compliance with employment and health and safety standards.
Coach and mentor staff for skill development and performance improvement.
Address performance or conduct issues in a fair and constructive manner when necessary.
Community Relations & Advocacy
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with community partners, funders, veterinarians, and other stakeholders.
Respond promptly and professionally to public inquiries, concerns, and complaints, determining when Board input is required.
Promote the mission and values of the Fraser Valley Humane Society in all community interactions.
Qualifications & Experience
Completion of a recognized animal care program preferred.
Minimum 2 years of experience caring for and handling animals in a shelter or veterinary environment.
At least 2 years of administrative or supervisory experience preferred.
Experience handling fearful, aggressive, or injured animals safely and compassionately.
Valid BC driver's license and reliable transportation.
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of animal health, welfare, and husbandry practices.
Ability to identify signs of illness and provide basic medical care as directed.
Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
Strong computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, data entry, and basic graphic design).
Able to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated ability to make sound, timely decisions in urgent or stressful situations.
Understanding of supervisory principles and human resources practices.
Knowledge of applicable legislation, including employment standards, human rights, and occupational health and safety.
Ability to maintain a positive public image and act as an ambassador for the organization.
Working Conditions
This position is based in a shelter environment, including both office and animal care areas. The role involves exposure to cleaning agents, animal dander, and occasional high-stress situations. The Feline Care Specialist must be physically capable of performing hands-on animal care and shelter maintenance duties as required. Flexibility is essential, as work hours may include evenings, weekends, and extended shifts to ensure all animals receive timely and humane care.
