provides direct, trauma-informed support to victims of domestic violence who are preparing to, or are in the process of, leaving an abusive relationship and are navigating the Family Court system. This role is key in ensuring clients feel supported, informed, and connected to the appropriate legal, safety, and community resources.
The FCSW also plays a critical role in building relationships with justice-sector stakeholders and advocating for clients within the family legal process.
Key Responsibilities
Client Support
Provide accessible, clear information about the Family Court process and Family Law matters.
Support clients in preparing for legal proceedings, including abuse history timelines and documentation.
Assist with safety planning & risk assessments (e.g., safe travel to/from court appointments).
Accompany clients to meetings with lawyers and to court appearances.
Support with applications for Emergency Custody and Access.
Debrief and explain outcomes of meetings with legal counsel, Duty Counsel, or FLIC.
Provide emotional support, grounding techniques, and anxiety management strategies during a high-stress time.
Help clients understand and apply for Legal Aid and assess eligibility for Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) certificates.
Respond to lawyer requests for documentation and timelines.
Attend Case Conferences when needed.
Offer referrals to internal and external supports (e.g., Outreach Counselling, therapy, transitional housing, employment support, cultural services).
Advocate for clients with family and criminal court-based services.
Community Engagement
Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with legal and justice-sector professionals, including lawyers, courts, and victim services.
Stay informed about changes to Family Law and community legal supports.
Provide presentations and workshops
Attend relevant trainings
Administrative Responsibilities
Maintain accurate, timely, and objective notes (case notes) in accordance with agency procedures.
Submit all administrative documentation (e.g., intake forms, service tracking, case files)
Prepare statistical reports and contribute to program evaluation efforts.
Participate in staff meetings, sharing relevant updates, insights, and opportunities for program growth.
Deliver occasional team presentations on relevant legal or social service topics.
Ensure all documentation aligns with confidentiality, ethical, and professional standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Degree or diploma in Social Work, Community Services, or a related field.
Minimum 2 years of experience working with survivors of domestic violence, ideally in a legal or court-related setting.
Sound knowledge of the Family Law system and Legal Aid Ontario processes.
Strong crisis intervention, safety planning, and emotional support skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication, with strong advocacy skills.
Ability to work independently while being part of a collaborative team.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in maintaining case records.
Experience working with diverse populations, including culturally-specific supports.
Clear Vulnerable Sector Check required.
Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle [if applicable].
