Reporting to the Executive Director at the Nawican Friendship Centre, the Family & Community Support Coordinator is responsible for providing holistic, culturally safe, and trauma-informed support services to individuals and families facing social, economic, or personal challenges. This role includes program coordination, direct case work, advocacy, community education, and outreach. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with internal staff and external service providers to connect clients to appropriate supports such as housing, healthcare, counselling, legal assistance, and wellness programming.

They must be adaptable, well-organized, and compassionate, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Provide individualized case management for clients, including needs assessment, action planning, referrals, and ongoing follow-up
Support families at risk of child welfare involvement by connecting them with housing, food, childcare, and culturally relevant supports
Coordinate and facilitate access to Nawican services such as the food hampers, toiletries, school supplies, and snacks
Facilitate workshops and support groups on topics including parenting, healthy relationships, self-advocacy, budgeting, nutrition, foraging, and cultural connection
Offer tailored programs for young and teen mothers, including prenatal support, parenting education, and supervised visitation
Provide guidance and cultural education to non-Indigenous families raising Indigenous children, and support cultural revitalization in Indigenous homes
Attend client appointments (e.g., medical, family court) as a support and advocate
Collaborate with the Case Management Team to assess community needs and co-create programs that close service gaps
Maintain accurate and confidential case files using our case management database
Prepare monthly program and case reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors
Contribute to Nawican events, outreach initiatives, and the development of community programming
Assist with administrative tasks or support other team members in their absence when required

Strong understanding of the social determinants of health, particularly those affecting Indigenous families
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across diverse age groups and backgrounds
Ability to build rapport quickly, manage crises calmly, and maintain confidentiality
Sound judgement, problem-solving, and advocacy skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and collaborate within a team
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and history, especially in the context of family wellness and reconciliation
Flexibility to adapt to changing client and organizational needs
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Social Work, Human Services, Child & Youth Care, or a related field, or equivalent work experience (1-3 years minimum)
Early Childhood Education training or equivalent experience with children is an asset.
Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or urban Indigenous service organizations is considered an asset.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook), with the ability to use tools efficiently for documentation and communication
Occupational First Aid and Food Safe certificates (or willingness to obtain)
Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive personnel information with professionalism and integrity
Must provide a clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
Valid Class 5 Driver's License and a clean Driver's Abstract
Preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry (pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code).
Work Conditions
37.5 hours per week; some evening or weekend work may be required depending on client and community needs.
Work is based at the Nawican Bergeron Youth and Cultural Centre or Nawican Emergency Homeless Shelter, with travel for outreach or community engagement as necessary.
