Course number and title: FAH393H5S Topics in Ancient Greco-Roman Art - Sport and Spectacle in Ancient Art and Architecture


Topic description: This course examines the art and architecture of sport and spectacle in the ancient Greco-Roman world. Students will analyze a wide range of primary source material--including architectural remains, mosaic pavements, sculpture, vase painting, and inscriptions--to explore how public entertainments, such as athletic and theatrical performances, gladiatorial combats and chariot racing, were visually represented and spatially experienced. Special attention will be given to the ways in which visual and built environments mediated public engagement with athleticism, performance, and violence, and how ancient sports and spectacles reinforced or contested specific cultural values, social hierarchies, and civic identities in the ancient Mediterranean.

Minimum qualifications: A Ph.D is essential. Mastery of the subject area is required. Demonstrated excellence in teaching this UTM course previously is required. Experience as a sole responsibility course instructor is an asset.


Description of duties: (May include but are not limited to): all normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and/or exams, supervision of teaching assistants, marking of students' work, submission of grades to university officials, and holding regular office hours.


Scheduling of guest speakers is limited to one week class session.
