In accordance with the , this position is permanent and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at with an annual salary range of $98,973 to $138,717.

Location - North Campus Edmonton. This role is in-person.

Moreover, Black people as a demographic are growing faster in Alberta than in any other region, apart from central Canada. Nearly 10% of Edmonton\'s population is of South Asian origin and 16% of East and Southeast Asian origin, with growing numbers of Edmontonians of Filipino, Latin American and Middle Eastern origins. The Edmonton public school system offers bilingual education for children in French, German, Hebrew, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), and American Sign Language. amiskwaciy Academy offers Cree as a high school credit and has started an Aboriginal study course in junior high school. At least two high schools, Amiskwaciy Academy and Victoria School of the Arts offer Cree and Blackfoot as a high school credit and has started an Indigenous Ways of Knowing program in junior high school.

Working for the Department/Faculty

Reporting to the Chair, the Faculty Service Officer supports and facilitates the teaching and research functions of faculty members, both by direct contributions to research and teaching and by providing administrative, managerial, and organizational support.

Position

The expectation is that the successful applicant will serve as Curator of the Archaeology and Ethnographic Collections. The FSO will also teach two HCE anthropology courses annually as required, and train and supervise graduate teaching assistants assigned to these courses. The Faculty Service Officer will maintain a research program as well as supervise Honours and graduate students within their areas of expertise. The position requires continuous upgrading of pertinent knowledge related to the discipline, as well as a broad knowledge of departmental collections and teaching aids, as well as curatorial standards, legislation and practices.

Duties

Curator (approx. 1/3 time)

  • Curates the Department of Anthropology\'s Archaeology and Ethnographic Collections as per University of Alberta Museums Policy and Procedures (UAPPOL), and various federal and provincial legislation.
  • Revisits and updates the Acquisition and Management Strategy for each Collection.
  • Ensures the Collections\' facility maintains its Accreditation requirements.
  • Develops Museum Collections and performs associated curatorial duties including overseeing new acquisitions, filing relevant insurance reports, contributing to collection policy development, ensuring research and study access to Collections, and management and conservation of these resources.
  • Ensures intellectual access to the Collections and develops/contributes to scholarly publications.
  • Develops and manages funds and resources related to the Collections, including identification of funding sources, preparation of applications, and grant management.
  • Develops and manages databases, graphic programs, and digital photographic records as they relate to Collections and Exhibition.
  • Creates (and trains staff/students to create) cast replicas of artifacts and specimens for teaching and public education. This could include scanning material to create 3D replicas.
  • Manages access and use of Collections by instructors, students, and researchers. Serves on various committees/advisory bodies (e.g., with University of Alberta Museums) on behalf of the Department and liaises with other units on campus as required.
  • Administers volunteer program, including organizing, training and supervising volunteers working on/with Collections material.
  • Liaises with various university offices about changes, renovations, etc. which might affect the collections.
Teaching (approx. 1/3 time)
  • Classroom instruction in the subdiscipline of archaeology, including the introductory level course (Anthropology 206) as well as senior and graduate level courses in their areas of expertise.
  • Laboratory class planning, preparation and instruction, including training Graduate Teaching Assistants assigned to specific courses, which include materials from the Collections.
  • Acquisition and/or preparation of instructional materials, audio-visual and teaching aids, and manuals for undergraduate and graduate biological anthropology courses as required.
  • Trains faculty and/or students in specialized archaeological skills related to their research or teaching.
Research (approx. 1/3 time)
  • Develops research program related to one or more aspects of archaeological science.
  • Supervises graduate and undergraduate (including Honours) student research.
  • Initiates and/or collaborates with faculty and graduate students on research projects in archaeology and material culture studies, which may include analysis of materials in the Archaeology and Ethnographic Collections.
  • Identifies and applies for grants/funding for the Collections and research projects.
  • Prepares, either in collaboration or as an individual, research and scholarly papers and posters for publication and/or presentation at professional meetings.
  • Develops and installs exhibits, including research, design and production, in accordance with the Collections\' mandate.
Administration
  • Establishes and updates annual strategic plans for Collections.
  • Manages annual budget for various projects (research, Collections management, and teaching).
  • Administers requisitions and loans.
  • Supervises Laboratory Coordinator and coordinates use of laboratories and Collections by faculty, academic visitors and graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Assists the lab manager in charge of the SAB Biosafety Laboratory and fulfills duties as required by Environment Health and Safety at the University of Alberta.
Service
  • Serves as Department representative on internal U of Alberta Museums and advisory bodies.
  • Serves on Departmental and University committees as appropriate for Cat. 1.3 FSO.
  • Maintains public access to Collections as per the Collections\' Mandate.
  • Public education: designs and runs laboratory sessions for school and/or lay groups/organizations, on request.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Post-graduate degree (minimum MA) in Anthropology, with experience working with Archaeological and Ethnographic collections.
  • Some teaching experience at a post-secondary institution.
  • Participation in professional conferences and continued membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g. Society for American Archaeology, and the Alberta Museums Association).
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) basic curatorial practices for other classes of materials, as needed.
  • Knowledge and application of current, specialized information and techniques associated with laboratory analysis of archaeological and ethnographic materials.
  • Knowledge of relevant university, provincial, and federal legislation relating to human remains, as well as the various conventions and treaties relating to museum collecting
