The School of Environment and Geomatics is seeking an instructor to teach in the Geographic Information System (GIS) and first year School of Environment and Geomatics diploma programs (Forestry; Recreation, Fish and Wildlife; Applied Environmental Science and Planning). Under the supervision of the School Chair, the successful applicant will have the education and experience to provide instruction in some or all of the following in-person courses, depending on qualifications: GIS 307: Remote Sensing in Resource Management, GIS 492: BGIS thesis, and ENVR 158: Introduction to Geomatics.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Provide instruction to students
Deliver GIS and remote sensing related courses in-person
Supervise a range of student research projects in GIS and remote sensing
Use industry standard software (proprietary and open source)
Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes and promote learning
Evaluate students, including providing constructive and meaningful feedback to students
Actively contribute to the college and the school, including participate in school and relevant program meetings
Develop or update curriculum according to Selkirk College values, policy, and procedures
Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and other members of college staff
Protect student information
Perform other duties as assigned by the School Chair or Dean
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Demonstrated expertise with Google Earth, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online, ENVI, and other related spatial data processing software
Expertise with field data collection using tablets and industry standard data apps (Avenza, ArcGIS Field Maps)
GIS and Remote Sensing:
Application of fundamental concepts in Geographic Information Science such as spatial data models, cartography, coordinate systems and datums, data visualization, data exploration and management, spatial data analysis, and editing
Recent experience with:
+ remotely sensed image pre-processing image enhancement techniques
+ digital image classification: pixel and object-based algorithms
+ change detection analysis and biophysical modelling with remotely sensed data
+ using a variety of open data catalogues for remotely sensed images and geospatial data
+ application of fundamental concepts in GIS such as spatial data models, cartography, coordinate systems and datums, data visualization, data exploration and management, spatial data analysis, and editing
+ application of fundamental concepts in Remote Sensing Demonstrated ability to conduct research to industry standards and supervise student research projects
Demonstrated ability to teach:
+ in-person course delivery experience
+ Previous use of a learning management system like Moodle
+ Demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and academic abilities
+ Teaching students at the post-secondary level GIS industry experience and local connections
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Excellent classroom management skills
Ability to contribute to school and/or college initiatives
Provide personal experiences that build confident and imaginative learners ready to thrive in their community and in our dynamic world
Excellent interpersonal communication skills

Education and Experience
Master's degree in GIS, remote sensing or related field with a focus on natural resource management
Two to three years teaching experience in a post-secondary environment
Industry GIS experience or research experience is desired.
Experience with field collection of geospatial data
Applicants with less education or experience may be considered for all or some of the available position.
This is a short-term, part-time (up to 66%) replacement position, commencing December 22, 2025, and ending February 20, 2026, or upon the return of the incumbent. Salary and Benefits are in accordance with the SCFA Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,709.12 - $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to SCFA members who are on layoff status and eligible for recall, as outlined in Articles 5.6 and 5.9 of the SCFA Collective Agreement.
