Job Summary


The mission of Facilities Management is to provide the Dalhousie community with an inviting, safe and sustainable environment which supports and enhances an inspiring experience in learning, living, working and research. Facilities Management is an innovative team of motivated professionals recognized for excellence in facilities management. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Asset Management at Facilities Management, the Architectural Planner works as part of a planning team on strategic long term Facilities Renewal planning, evaluation, and management of over $2B of university facilities assets to ensure a sustainable, safe and inviting environment for the Dalhousie campus.


Key Responsibilities


Evaluate and prioritize asset renewal projects and space alteration and renovation projects based on asset's condition, operating costs, and impact on University operations to develop short, medium, and long term renewal strategy. Develop and present an annual projects priority list outlining business case, budget, schedule, and resources needed to execute the projects. Represent the University's interest in all pre-design and progress meetings with internal and external stakeholders to review documentation of assigned projects ensuring University Design Guidelines and building codes are adhered to. Consult with internal stakeholders and industry experts to maintain and update the University Design Guidelines with latest acceptable industry standards. In conjunction with other members of the FM Team, monitor on an ongoing basis the budget and schedule of assigned projects to ensure projects are progressing as planned and, if needed, determine an alternate course of action. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and with government officials in identifying enhancements to existing fire and life safety systems and preparing an implementation plan to those enhancements.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.


Required Qualifications


University degree and/or professional degree in planning, architecture, or engineering, plus considerable experience in planning and design of building systems, space alteration and renovation projects, and fire and life safety systems (or an equivalent combination of training and experience). Proven communication (written and verbal) skills. Ability to effectively work with university stakeholders and regulatory bodies. Experience working independently and in a team environment managing projects and accomplishing organizational goals.

Experience in a similar role in a large institutional or post-secondary environment.
