SCOPE
Reporting to the Manager, Consulting Team, in the Real Estate, Operations and Administrative Service unit of Facilities Management, the incumbent provides architectural planning services, and/or signage design and wayfinding services to both internal clients and external partners. The incumbent must consolidate various standards and objectives to ensure quality, durability, and cost effectiveness for each project.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as user/stakeholder representative throughout the planning process; ensure consideration/integration of Strategic Planning filters into the proposed design solutions while enforce adherence to university standards and best practice.
  • Act as a specialist, determine the level of signage and wayfinding required on each project, or intervention in the University's built environment.
  • Coordinate the portfolio of signage requests from the planning and design phase through implementation while keeping within schedules, specifications, and budgets.
  • Lead specific architectural and/or signage projects through internal pre-conceptual design initiatives for facilities management; investigate and recommend conceptual design changes, methods, and improvements to proposed solutions.
  • Manage a series of feasibility studies, business cases and strategic development projects for construction or renovation; provide space planning advice, guidance and technical support to internal clients, discuss needs and analyze requirements.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and design pre-concept architectural and/or signage solutions to meet client needs, code requirements and facilities management standards.
  • Lead teams composed of internal clients and services and external professionals to the successful completion of project studies and scope definitions; review project documents at various stages in the work to ensure alignment with project design goals and support internal and external partners with answers to questions relating to architectural services and/or signage standards and wayfinding projects.
  • Manage professional contracts for architectural and signage work outside of Project Management; evaluate the effectiveness of professionals and of suppliers of different mandates.
  • Act as quality control point by reviewing drawings and specifications issued by professionals and external consultants at all phases of a project; ensure conformity with codes, regulations, and University standards.
  • Compile pertinent information for the development of projects by researching best practices in architectural and/or signage design and wayfinding; contribute to updating the University's architectural standards and specifications and technical programs such as the implementation of sustainable design, and Diversity, Equity and inclusion
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, Graphic Design, Environmental Design, or in a field relevant to the primary responsibilities and four to seven years of job related experience as an architect
  • Permit holding Member in good standing of the Ordre des Architectes du Quebec or another equivalent professional association
  • Master's degree is an asset.
  • LEED or WELL certification, an asset
  • Certification from the Project Management Institute (PMP), an asset
  • Ability to understand and read construction plans, product specifications, and shop drawings
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building codes, construction practices, laws, and procedures
  • Track record elaborating projects, preparing feasibility studies and business plans and strong construction knowledge.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of written and spoken English and French (Level 4: able to write reports, able to respond with sensitivity to queries and to communicate with the general public).
  • Basic knowledge of Word (able to format documents), and PowerPoint (able to build presentations using a template). Intermediate knowledge of Excel (able to create spreadsheets and prepare financial calculations). Experience using MS Project, E-mail, and the Internet
  • Solid Knowledge of AutoCAD, latest version, and general graphic software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketchup, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Customer orientation with ability to anticipate potential problems and address them proactively.
  • Excellent emotional intelligence and communication skills and ability to manage complex situations with sensitivity. Ability to manage multiple projects and ensure meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience with institutional-educational projects, an asset
