Location: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Employment Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)

About DSSC



Founded in 1976, the Dartmouth Seniors Service Centre (DSSC) is a vibrant, non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of seniors in the Dartmouth community. From humble beginnings offering social programs two days a week, DSSC now serves over 600 members, operating 6 to 7 days a week with more than 20 active programs. These include fitness and wellness classes, Meals on Wheels, medical assistance and transportation services, social events, educational sessions, and creative workshops.

As DSSC embarks on an exciting new chapter with the recent launch of a comprehensive Strategic Plan, we are seeking a dynamic and compassionate Executive Director to lead our mission with energy, empathy, and vision.

Position Overview



The Executive Director (ED) is the senior leader of DSSC, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. This role requires a passionate, hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can work effectively with seniors, volunteers, staff, and community partners. The ED is responsible for the overall management, strategic direction, operations, and sustainability of the organization in alignment with its mission and new strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities



Leadership & Strategic Oversight

Lead the implementation of DSSC's newly developed Strategic Plan. Inspire, align, and support staff and volunteers in achieving strategic objectives. Foster a mission-driven, collaborative, and high-performance culture. Act as the primary liaison between the Board and staff.

Program & Service Delivery



Oversee the planning and execution of diverse programs, including Meals on Wheels, fitness classes, educational events, and food services. Ensure offerings meet the evolving needs of our senior community. Maintain awareness of community trends and innovations in senior care and engagement.

Financial & Operational Management



Develop and manage annual budgets, financial reports, and operational plans. Ensure financial sustainability through sound fiscal oversight and compliance. Apply for grants and create a successful fundraising environment to meet budgetary needs.

Human Resources & Staff Development



Manage a team of approximately 20 full-time and part-time staff. Lead recruitment, training, performance management, and professional development. Ensure workplace safety and compliance with Nova Scotia's Occupational Health & Safety Act. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across the organization.

Volunteer Engagement



Oversee and support 80-100 dedicated volunteers, many of whom are seniors themselves. Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive volunteer environment.

Community Relations & Communications



Represent DSSC in the community, building relationships with donors, government agencies, partner organizations, and media. Promote DSSC's services and mission through effective communications and public outreach.

Board Relations & Governance



Support the Board in governance functions and strategic decision-making. Provide timely and accurate reports and updates to the Board.

Qualifications & Skills



Education & Experience

1-3 years post-secondary education or 3-5 years of executive or senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or related field. Experience working with seniors, community-based programming, or human services preferred. Strong knowledge of budgeting, fundraising, and program development. Proficiency with computers and ability to quickly learn new software systems.

Core Competencies



Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills. Compassionate and respectful communicator--especially with seniors. Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities under pressure Knowledge of food services and kitchen operations (an asset). Comfortable in hands-on roles and visible, everyday leadership.

Special Requirements



Valid Driver's License Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening Knowledge of the Dartmouth community Food Safety Certification, First Aid, and WHMIS (assets)

Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 annually
