About Us
The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Correctional Services consists of three core program areas: custody, community corrections and program services.
Community corrections has 22 offices across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney and is responsible for the supervision of both adult and young persons serving community-based sentences. The sentences include probation, conditional sentence, custody and supervision, conditional supervision and Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision.
Custody consists of Four (4) adult correctional facilities and one (1) youth centre providing safety and security of person in custody while utilizing programs that address dynamic criminogenic factors to assist with successful reintegration back into the community.
Policy and Program Services involves the provision of education, clinical social work service, case management, sentence administration, policy oversight. This is a diverse unit consisting of social workers, teachers, policy managers and case workers.

About Our Opportunity
As the Executive Director, you will be responsible to provide strategic leadership through the direction and administration of Nova Scotia Correctional Services in accordance with the Correctional Services Act. The Executive Director ensures Correctional Services human centered, culturally competent and responsive to the changing social landscape and are reflected in its standards, policies, practices and staff.
The Executive Director oversees the policy, administration, operation and management of adult, youth custody and Community Corrections. Modernizing the delivery of correctional services, focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration strategies that support improved outcomes for all under community supervision and in custody. This includes the audit and inspection of all practices and structures to create proactive service delivery model, while infusing human-centred practices in all facets of Correctional Services.
Primary Accountabilities
Some of the key responsibilities in this role include:
Ensures the effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating organizational performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace.
Provides Senior Management/Executive Team leadership in formulating the business plan, mandate and accountability reports, developing legislative, policy, and accountability frameworks and identifying strategic priorities and outcomes in support of cross-department programs, services and initiatives and in support of key corporate policy and planning initiatives.
Oversight of divisional recruitment including position qualifications, staff deployment and deportment, training, discipline, succession planning and development of overall teamwork environment between operating units and within division generally, consistent with the Division Code of Professional Conduct
Establishes and maintains appropriate labour relations by promoting a safe work environment, responsive communication with union leadership and employees.
Ensures appropriate representation of the Division/Department to lead and/or participate on corporate initiatives and special projects, at the departmental, community, provincial and F/P/T levels regarding legislation, public policy and programs and provide strategic advice and expertise to the Associate Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister and Minister. Key contact with respect to media inquiries and interviews. Sits as member of Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) Heads of Corrections.
Qualifications and Experience
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Criminology, Social Sciences, Commerce / Business Administration). You will have several years of progressive leadership experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior management role. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
As the ideal candidate you possess a specialized level of technical knowledge with a demonstrated history of providing solutions and alternatives to complex technical issues, applying constructive thinking and interpretation/application within a broad context. You will have highly developed skills in all aspects of leadership.
Drawing on previous experiences, with a proven ability to accomplish goals and objectives, you balance priorities, meet deadlines, balance conflicting views, and achieve specific and accurate outcomes often within a very tight time frame and competing deadlines. You possess exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) with a proven ability to build and maintain relationships. You have a strong attention to detail, with a demonstrated history of providing accurate information and sound advice.
You are a highly motivated self-starter with the ability to build strong team dynamics and look forward strategically on issues. You have the ability to develop human-centred solutions to administrative process problems. Strong presentation skills are essential to tailor deliverables for both technical and non-technical audiences and you understand policy issues in the public sector.
