Job Summary




The Executive Director (ED), Clinical Services is a senior leader and strategic advisor to the Vice-Dean, Clinical Services, with responsibility for advancing the Faculty of Health Sciences' clinical enterprise. Reporting jointly to the Vice Dean, Clinical Services and the Chief Operation Officer for FHS, the ED provides executive oversight of clinical academic departments, manages the Faculty's relationships with affiliated hospitals and academic physician groups, and ensures effective administration of clinical practice and alternate funding plans (AFPs) and provides governance, financial stewardship, and oversight of AFP operations.


The ED is responsible for managing the Faculty's relationship with Hamilton Academic Health Sciences Organization (HAHSO), Hamilton Academic Pediatric Association (HAPA), Regional Medical Associates (RMA), and Ontario Physician Reporting Centre (OPRC). The ED may also, with the approval of the HAHSO Board and HAPA Board, serve as the Executive Director of one or both AFPs.


The role fosters collaboration across McMaster, hospital partners, and provincial stakeholders to support excellence in patient care, education, and research.

Key Accountabilities



Operational Leadership and Oversight



Provide executive oversight of the operational management of clinical departments. Mentor and support Directors of Administration, Chairs/Chiefs, and other senior leaders. Partner with FHS HR-FR and AVP/CAO to align practices, enhance efficiency, and strengthen administrative capacity. Act as subject matter expert on hospital relations, clinical billings, practice plans, and AFPs.

Governance of Alternate Funding Plans



Serve as Executive Director of HAHSO and HAPA, ensuring effective governance, budgeting, reporting, and compliance. Support the Vice-Dean, Clinical Services, in provincial and external AFP discussions.

Strategic Advisory to Vice-Dean, Clinical Services



Provide strategic advice on hospital partnerships, physician groups, AFPs, and distributed campus operations. Represent FHS in external negotiations, including affiliation agreements and Ministry-level initiatives.

Collaboration and Team Leadership



Foster strong partnerships across FHS, Hamilton Health Sciences, and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Promote collaboration among clinical departments and broader Faculty leadership. Mentor and develop Directors of Administration to advance operational excellence.

Human Resources and Financial Stewardship



Partner with the Executive Director, Finance, FHS, to ensure strong fiscal management of clinical departments. Support budget planning, risk management, and HR leadership for clinical departments and faculty.

Committee Involvement and External Engagement



Participate in Faculty, hospital, and provincial committees including Faculty Executive, Finance Committee, and FHS/HHS/SJHH Liaison Committee. Maintain relationships with the Ontario Medical Association, COFM, and the Ministry of Health.

Inclusive Excellence



Champion Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation (EDI-IR) across clinical departments. Support development of leaders and health human resource planning that reflects McMaster's values of inclusion and respect.

Qualifications



Education



Master's degree in Health Administration or Business Administration (health focus), with demonstrated competence in finance and accounting. Professional certification with the Canadian College of Health Leaders and/or the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Experience



10-15 years of senior leadership experience in healthcare or academic environments. Proven success in large, complex organizations with medical education as a core mandate. Experience with complex contract administration, hospital operations, and academic physician groups.

Knowledge & Skills



Strategic thinking with ability to align day-to-day operations to long-term vision. Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and negotiation skills. Advanced expertise in medical education, clinical practice plans, AFPs, and teaching hospital operations. Deep knowledge of HR, finance, governance, and risk management in multi-stakeholder contexts. Ongoing professional development in HR, finance, and leadership Ability to lead with transparency, fairness, and integrity.

Other Information




This role requires flexibility to travel to host hospital sites and work a flexible hybrid arrangement and to be on-site as operationally required.
